Shoulder Dents/ fireforming

Hey laaaaads!
34 Degrees C outside today, definatly indoor weather for this Winter Duck!

I finally got around to Resizing some NNY 308 Brass (ppu/highland) into the Famed 7mm (.284) and a while Ago I mustn't of had the FLS set up right an Putting TOO much lube on the necks an getting cute little shoulder Dents.

I also rekon I noticed that when FLS from 308 Winchester to 7mm08 Remington, Does this create some kind of 'false shoulder' until fireformed for that 100% 7mm08 shape?

The Dents I'm assuming will iron out with full pressure loads? - note : I'm developing a 120gr load in this Brass, Min loads .

Keeping the Federal Brass for the Woodleighs and Hunting.

Yes, the dents are probably from too much lube. They will fire form out.

I would set the stroke to size less than than the full neck down to 7mm, and keep trying the case in the gun. Stop sizing it down when it will chamber. That may be with no neck left to size, or it may be with a false shoulder. Doesn't matter as long as you don't oversize the brass.
 
Well, you better not come over here now, Mr. duck. I live in what is considered one of the warmer areas of Canada, but it was officially minus 22.1 degrees C this morning, but forecast to go down to only minus 20 C tonight. I think it warmed up to 14 today.
On your sizing down operation, it may solve all your problems if you annealed the cases before sizing them.

Kinda neat, the snow sqweeks when you walk on it.

I wasn't walking in good "squeaking" snow this morning, but yes, minus 24 C is about cold enough to squeak.
When I was a kid 40 bellow F was common and a loaded sleigh behind horses squeaked so loud you could hear it for 2 or 3 hundred yards.

well it looks like it anywho.... u know the change of colour from about 10mm down the body from the shoulders Up. ;)


Yeah I get it, I'm happy with it and il run it.


Copy on the Lil bit at a time, until it fits, sort of did that until it fit then ran them all at that.

The FLS I'm using is a Redding deluxe kit.... "Cuzns"
but my Lee 308 dies dnt have a breather.... I swear I seen em elsewhere... hmmmm Whelen? Yes only the whelen not even the LEe 270s?

weird ish. unless its under the lock ring...but ima not touchin that thang :D
 
RCBS has breather hole. Don't recall Lee having one.

copy that mate, I do rmemeber when tere was so much lube on the 35 cases that it was oozing out after each pass thru..... that's how ya know shes lubed an doin a good job LOL....

but yeah I'm sure none of my other Cals have them, majority are LEE Dies. 270-308-708-35wln. 375win are redding . and the borrowed FLS is a redding in 708.

All good, I use that LEE lube too, so I think that's easy to get shoulder dents.

Lee has the vent holes, at least all the ones I've bought in the last 20 years do.
I only lube the body about 3/4 of the way up to the shoulder, and inside the neck. Never any lube on the shoulder or outside neck.
If you have lube squirting out the vent it's time to take your die apart and clean it all out....and start using less lube lol.
 
yeh its all good now days... bit of tounge in cheek responses.

my breathers must be under the lock ring or something odd.... all good.

Yes, I believe you. They should be annealed from the factory. You could consider annealing them after sizing down, but I will admit I never immediately anneal my 7mm sized down to .264 brass.

On the lube dents, it can also be just the accumulation of lube over many sizings. It helps to clean the die out now and then. I have vent holes on my dies and it doesn't prevent the dents. Being a little more careful with the amount of lube and cleaning the dies every so often does the trick though.
 
Different lubes give different results.
Some even use STP.

I've got some nasty ruffles when necking down creating different necks
stamped on the case head.

Been using RCBS lewb, but may have to try some t'uther ointmint.

Mr. H...............-40 is minus forty on both scales...............:wave:

I have used STP for years, and have recommended it. However, I recently tested STP against Lyman sizing lube in a tube. The STP was a very poor second. Will not be using it again. Just bought some liquid lanolin from a health food store, and on a quick test it seems quite similar to the Lyman. Will have to do a better test to compare the two.
