when I was taking my hunter education course our instructor told us about this tool he'd heard of called a wooden dog, its meant for retrieving water fowl from the water if you don't have a dog, now I have looked for these online trying to find an image of one because I cannot remember if it needs some treble hooks on it as well or if its just a piece of wood with a length of rope.

so if you know please let me know.

Go on You Tube, "Busy Bayman Kris Rumboldt". He makes one. I have used them before, but the birds have got to be close to shore. It's basically a 2x4 with fish hooks on each side attached to a rope. You throw it out over the bird and try to retrieve it. They are a pain in the a**. A fishing rod is better.

We used to make our own, wooden plug, large fish hooks and an eye hook. 30lb braided line and a telescopic rod and your off to shoot bog hole black ducks.

I made one. Piece of dowel, a lead weight on one end, and a few treble hooks.

Just use a floating musky plug and a short stiff fishing rod... no matter what you use, floating weeds are a b!tch...

Or you could try a set of chest waders?

you've never been out on the barren's in NL have you, we have these pools of water out there where the only ground around them is a couple of feet of peat you get stuck in them unless you got someone with you to help fish you out, your stuck there most likely to die. it happens to moose alot

I thought the oil patch was in Newfoundland? Now I'm confused? Most of the people I work with here sound like Newfoundlanders? Hmmmm....

Either they're lost or I am?? ;)

Man - O - Man! I have one of those! I kept it just because...Not sure where it came from because I never ordered it from K-Tel...maybe my brother. Ha!
Thanks for the walk down memory lane...

seen these guys in Port Renfrew BC on the dock pointing into the bay behind the hotel and talking about a big Spring that was caught the year before.
The guy doing the pointing was telling how the Spring was chasing bait fish in the shallows and all he had was this rod with a buzz bomb tied to it.
Flipped it out there and the Spring hit it...the other guy was shaking his head calling BS and such.
Kicker is my buddy who worked there on the dock for 15 years was a wittness to the story and as we where walking by collaborated the story for him.
This was 1991 ish when the fish was caught...
True Story ...
Sorry for the derail but, those pocket fisherman just might be the cats meow for the retrieval of a owned duck in a large dugout or pond where access is limited.

How do you toss a pool noodle thirty feet or more?
You could link 10 pool noodles together, that would be plausible.

Well the picture was good, thanks for that...but have you ever tried to toss a pool noddle? I have. I can only imagine that ten together would be worse. Maybe I need to send this into Myth Busters... :)
