Hey new here, I have a question about my shotgun. A bit of a newb and I'm confident inot what I do but want to know lots of details. My guns an older mossberg 500 12ga pump. I love it! Got my first two ducks with it! Just curious though.. the barrel is a modified choke, not screw in, built into barrel. Can this fire slugs? I know you can with smoothbore barrels and specific slugs (just trying to learn more about them) but can it go through with the choke? Thanks for any help!

Yes it can fire both Foster type slugs and sabot type slugs. It will shoot the rifled Foster type better likely and much lower cost. Go to Federal or Winchester 1 oz. rifled slugs. Remington will work too. No damage will be incurred by your fixed modified choke.

So I'm sure it just takes some simple measurements but figured I would ask, is the diameter of these slugs generally smaller than that of the bore of my gun at the tip? I've been told before it's a bad idea because it may be too tight but I guess this isn't the case?

This is an older 500A, I've recently tried replacing the magazine cap for one with a sling attachment on it, found though that the thread on replacement caps was smaller diameter than the threading on my guns magazine. Is anyone familiar with this? I've considered just buying a rifled barrel for it but I'm unsure if they are made with this thread that matches. If that didn't match though I would assume I can use the same cap with the different barrel, or is this something where the older models won't take newer barrels and other parts?

Damn now that I think back to going into that shop I think know it was the opposite, the cap thread on mine was smaller because the universal plug was too big to fit into the magazine sorry I believe I had that backwards

Sabot slugs will not be accurate out of a smooth bore; they are meant to be used with a rifled barrel or choke tube.

My Benelli M4 has a modified choke (got different ones now) and I have shot many slugs through it. If you use soft lead rifled slugs they will squeeze right through a modified choke, although you generally get better accuracy with a Cylinder or Improved Cylinder choke.

Mad trapper gave the definitive answer above. Just for chits and giggles you should take a couple of different brands of shells, carefully cut out the slug by slicing the shell and miking and/or physically trying to check the fit yourself.

Cheap way is to get 3 or 4 brands of Foster slugs, 4 sheets of dollar store cardboard, a steady rest and give er! Most likely one of the brands will outclass the others, typically 2 3/4" slugs are a tad more accurate and are less punishing than 3" ones.

If your not allready on EE get in there ! As for a rifled barrel when you consider the cost it might be better just to get a whole other shot gun allready equipped with it. . There are deals out there, ya just have to keep an eye out for them !
