Was looking at a $150. scope and mount Barska is selling for the SKS. In the store it seems pretty good, according to the vendor only needing a bit of home gunsmithing to ensure a good fit. The scope itself seemed to be very acceptable for the price, variable light up reticle, zoom function, and all. In fact it offers so much that it's what is making me nervous. The reviews on the Cabela's site are almost perfectly split between the 5 and one star categories, what do people here say?

This is the truth here. anything that replaces the dust cover will always have some play and no matter how tight you get it, it will never be tight enough. Either drill and tap to the side like a choate or other type mount, or the magwedge/other brands that bridge from the front site to the rear cover pin.

I started out with a dust cover replacement and scope and it worked well for about 2 trips to the range. After that It would not hold zero. I switched to a Magwedge type mount (different band but same thing) and could not be happier. I am just running a cheap amazon.ca scope but the rail has made all the difference. The only down side is that it eliminates the use of stripper clips but this wasn't really an issue for me.
I say, save your money. That's just me though... willing to bet you will lose your zero right quick if this is the setup (receiver cover mount) you are talking about.

Unless you get super lucky and get one that fits perfect or file it perfectly you will never keep Zero with that mount. I have a different version and it's just not reliable. I got the mount with scope from marstar and we'll the scope works ok and will be useful on my other rifles. The mount however is not so great.
^^^ I've seen the mount Marstar sells and it, ummmm, did not inspire me. Despite the negative comments here, I still find myself torn between an instinct to not do anything to permanently compromise the original setup and the knowledge that the iron sights are really hard for me to use, near useless in anything but good light conditions. I can think of several ways to bed the mount to prevent loss of zero, but of course the problem is that this is a rifle that needs cleaning every dang time you use it, thanks to the Commie ammo. Maybe I'll wait for a sale or something, a sign as it were. Thanks to everyone for their advice.
Sell it and buy something you can easily mount a scope on. Or shoot it until you can use irons well. They do make front f/o sights for these, and a mojo rear peep might help.
Post/notch are not my favorite sights either, but they are functional enough for what these guns are meant to do.
Do what I did and get rid of it. Iron sights are getting more difficult for me (getting close to bifocal territory) so it's now peep sights, red dots and scopes. Still keeping my pistols and VZ58 w/irons.
