I am looking to use my 870 Tacticool as a backup in 3 gun and due to wrist issues, I find it difficult to cycle and would like to try out a pistol grip forend to see if that helps.

Any recommends on a decent product and real world experience would be greatly appreciated.

If you went with a railed forend or Magpul forend you could use any vert grip.

Do you want to wrap your hand fully around the grip like holding with a closed fist or wrap your fingers around with thumb ahead or just use a ramped type grip?

Lots to pick from if you use some form of a rail on the forend.

I bought a pistol grip from Canam. Not sure if they have them anymore. I originally had it on a grizzmag, but now I have it on one of my old wingmasters. It was a 'tommy gun' style. I like it, but it does take some getting use to. I can feel how it can twist side to side somewhat , and it made me wonder if that will cause me problems at some point. Its been on it for a few years now with no issue as of yet....

I'd suggest an "Ergo" brand railed forend and then u can use any pistol grip you want to try. I would like to mention however that vertical grips can cause torqueing of the action bars which is not good for them or the receiver.

I guess the first question would be why do you find it difficult to cycle ?

Is it painful on your wrist (maybe an injury ?), or does the forearm seem too far away ?

Personally don't like a pistol grip forend on an SG but I can see an angled grip on a railed forend (MagPul's for example) .... would give a more natural wrist angle.

Used to think that the NHL might come calling...they never did. Wrists and shoulders suffered as a result of the wait.

Figured it might be an injury.

Try cycling action (empty) with just your thumb & first finger. If that doesn't hurt ..... notice the natural angle your hand is at ? Hence the angled grip recommendation.

Yep, cool factor is the least of my concerns. lol

Makes sense, I'll try that. Thanks for the advice.

Not sure of your injury (i.e. shoulder, elbow, wrist, grip).
Might want to try super sticky stock type forearms such as Hogue.
I find I don't have to put as much tension in my hands/wrist to cycle the action compared to the slicker front ends.
If you don't want a full pistol grip you might want to try the ARG (sp) from Magpul. I'd borrow rather than buy since the "feel" is really different.

A shorter buttstock changes the relationship between shooting stance and body position which might be sufficient to alleviate some of your issues.

Hope you find a solution that works for you.

Not sure why the need for a back-up if your primary shotgun is reliable. However, if you're going to be proficient with your 870 then you're going to have to practice extensively with it. If your injuries are that bad, I can imagine not wanting to use it at all.

If you truly need a secondary shotgun, you should have your secondary be the same as your primary. I think it would be a better long term solution for you. I think having to transition to a completely different firearm during competition would not be good for your game.

Tried your suggestion, definitely an angle is required.

Rotator injury and getting old. Only have decent support strength at certain angles. The way I hold a beer is hilarious.

Madashell`s suggestions found a comfortable angle so it does look like a pistol grip forend will be the solution should I go with the mods.

I am a boy scout, `Be Prepared`. It`s a just in case thing.

I mentioned in another post that I am new to the 3 gun game. I am not totally sold on using the shotgun that I purchased for this. It is going to need forend mods as well because of my old injuries. Might as well mod both, pick the one that works best for me and have an extra shotgun.

At least you're working toward a solution shawnboy. Hope you figure out a work around and get to enjoying the shooting competition.
