Projectiles for 460 s&w magnum

If they are not gas checked, leading may be an issue at 460 velocities. I use 45 colt loads with cast lead .452 - 250 gr semi-wad cutter bullet in my 454 casull just fine, but, the same bullet at 454 casull velocities I get heavy leading.

I only used Hornady XTP-mag projectiles in mine when loading full power 460 loads. They are built to handle the velocities produced by the cartridge. At those velocities you need to start considering more than just if it's the correct diameter. Loading for a cartridge like this isn't the right time to start looking for cheap alternatives.
I would get some 45LC brass and load those projectiles in those for use in the 460 if you want some cheap plinking loads. Just watch for fouling at the case mouth before trying to switch back to shooting the slightly longer 454 or 460 cartridges.

Also, I found that after sufficient shooting of 45LC, lead starts coating the muzzle brake baffles(? for want of a better word that I can't think of offhand), and from memory seemed to be incredibly difficult to remove. When you switch back to 454Casull or .460S&W, the first shot WILL blow it clean of all remaining detritus, much to the displeasure of anyone on either side.

Mine had two different brakes, I thought one was for cast and one was for jacketed. I never switched to try the other but I shot very few cast projectiles through mine in any of the three calibers. I hate lead fouling and even stopped loading them in my 45acp loads.

Ok, so I purchased a box of Hornady FTX 45cal. .452 225gr bullets for it.
I think these will do. .
40gr of H110 and Federal Premium Rifle match mag primers.
Looking forward to reloading for this bad boy!!!!

I haven't loaded for the 460 in a couple years but didn't it just call for rifle primers not magnum rifle primers? Be careful and start with a little lower powder charge if that is correct. Also remember that H110 does not respond well to being loaded light, if you're not loading full power loads pick a different powder.
Is this the first cartridge you've reloaded?
Be very careful, the 460 is a very high pressure cartridge and could do a lot of damage, it is not really a cartridge I'd recommend to start a reloading career with.

Don't start substituting components, stick to published data. You can use different brands of primers or projectiles but if it calls for LR don't switch to LR magnum primers.
If you've shot your revolver yet you'll know this cartridge is F'n nuts and isn't the kind of cartridge you want to be experimenting with to see if this or that is close enough.

I'll have to go have a look at my Hornady manual and log book, I can't remember what my loads were exactly.

I loaded thousands upon thousands of .40 s&w, 9mm, 45acp, 357 mag, 38spl, 223 rem, 7mm rem mag.
This will be first for 460 mag.
Think I bought wrong bullets. Bought hotnady 225gr ftx. Thos are fir 45 colt.
Im off to get some of the heavier mag ones.

Do you have the Hornady reloading manual? If not PM me your email address and I'll send you a picture of the pages from my manual.

What do you do when one data calls for LRM and the other LR for same projectile

I used h110 with lrmagnum primers for the 240 and 300 grain xtp. With the starting load on the Hodgdon site I was getting pressure problems. The primers were flattened right out and brass stuck in the wheel. The next time I went out I loaded the 240 xtp with 40 grains of h110 and got around 1500 fps over the chrony and that seemed ok. I read that h110 doesn't like to be loaded light, so I've abandoned it until I can try a different powder.

Let us know if you have a successful load and what the data was? I've read online that quite a few people have had the same problem as me with the .460.
