9mm Ammo suggestions

If you are going on to IPSC, you would probably want to start reloading. It is not even the cost that is the factor, but also if you reload, you know EXACTLY what you have, knowing it is reliable, and the power factor of the ammo. Oh, and in case I didn't mention it, it is a lot cheaper :)!

Is it really cheaper once your time and space in your home is factored in?

Don't factor in your time. Would you factor in your time when golfing, or mowing the lawn, or taking the dog for a walk?

It's a hobby. It doesn't need to take up much space, either.

What's the approximate break even point on the initial purchase of equipment, primers, powder, etc vs the savings per round? 10k? 20k?

I've heard mixed opinions on reloading 9mm. Some say you'll save a bit, others have said you won't save a penny, but you will shoot more haha

It depends on a few factors, I bought a almost new but used press and dies for 9mm & 45acp, cost about $190.00, plus I can use the press for many other calibres. I'm doing 9mm for about 0.19 a round and the 45 for about 0.27 each.

Some say about half if you use range brass and keep the toys incheck..

I cast my own bullets so based on current cost of primers, powder and lead, my material cost is less than $0.09 per 9mm round. $90.00 per thousand.

Casting and reloading are fun hobbies for me. Started reloading both to save and be able to shoot more. Back then it was 300 rds .45acp twice a week. So was able to recoup equipment cost quickly.

Fair enough, but I can think of many things I'd rather do than reload, mow the lawn or walk a dog. To each their own eh

So I'm purchasing a CZ Shadow 2 in the next 2 weeks and I plan on getting into IPSC this year. This is my first 9mm so I'm looking for suggestions on what brands and grain I should be considering. Probably pickup 1000 rounds if I can.
Thanks

John & Brad over at Custom Reloading Services make some really good stuff, and it's generally ~2/3rds the cost of factory ammo. When I started reloading, I ran some of their reloads and a couple of types of factory ammo over my chrono. I still use the CRS ammo to run a baseline string at the start of each chrono session.

Results through your Shadow 2 will be different of course.

I load my 9mm major at about 17 cents a round. I do not factor in brass as 9mm brass is usually free or low cost that can be reloaded again and again. One Thousand rounds does not last long in IPSC, so yeah u would definitely want to reload.

Waiting to hear back from them on Monday. Support my local business and all.

I am intrigued.

Casting my own bullets, I'm ~9 cents a round:

wheelweights = $0.almost nothing; anymore you gotta watch for steel / zinc wheelweights, but even then they're real cheap; $15 for just about all I can lift into the trunk.

powder - $50ish/2,000 (3.2gr each - 1,000ish fps, wouldn't want to drive them any faster for fear of leading) = 2.3 cents a round

primer - $6/100 = 6 cents each

Equipment = A LOT; but I bought my 9mm progressive (Dillon Square Deal) 25 years ago; they were cheaper then, and it's cranked-out many thousand rounds.

When you figger-out $9 a hundred, it's real hard to shoot .22 for that anymore.

I just received my CZ SP-01 I purchased boxing day sale. I have purchased Some PPU, American Eagle, and Firearms Outlet Can. 9mm rounds. I paid $275.00 for 1000 rounds of the FOC and they did not tell me it was reloads although I will see how it shoots....compared to the others.
Personally more interested in loading my own so into collecting brass for now. Heard Blazer brass was good......????????

I don't really find too much difference in the various brands of brass. They mostly get lost or crunched before they wear out anyhow :) Just be careful with anything that has an "NT" stamp on it. It stands for non-toxic primer, but usually it's also a crimped primer and a real PITA. I usually just toss those into my scrap brass bin right away, rather than waste a primer trying to force it in. I could ream out the primer pocket, but even then it's still 50/50 on properly seating the primer.

The reloading part is interesting, but I think casting is outside of my comfort zone in terms of practicality and knowledge. Not to mention my intolerance to my wife asking me why i'm trying to burn the house down with molten metal.

$0.09 per round is REALLY impressive though- bravo!
