I have recently been noticing that the #8 shot, and #9 Hummason shot looked to be the same size. Finally got out my micrometer to check and shot from bags ( just checked 2 bags ) marked 8 & 9 both mic'ed at .09 inch avg. #8 size.
Wondering if I just got unluckily and got some miss baged shot or is this the norm:confused:

Could be bagged wrong, their is, for the record, a great variation in size producing shot. It is run over plates to separate by roundness, then screened for size. It isn't unusual to get some variation per bag, smaller pellets would work their to the bottom of the bag through movement.

It's the norm.
If it bothers you, buy Lawrence magnum shot @ +$$

I checked 8 bags marked #9 and got 5 bags #8, 2 bags #8 1/2, & 1 bag of #9.
When I use 1/2 & 3/4oz. loads I want every pellet I can get, so yes I do intend to use Lawrence magnum shot for those applications in the future. The cheaper Hummison shot is OK for other things.

This is really interesting. I shoot a 12ga 3/4oz load and have always used Hummason because its where I get my powder from. I had never guessed that the pellet count could be so far off.

Can you buy some sort of shot sieve? How did you determine what sizes were in the bag?

When I used to load I never thought to gauge the shot. I just loaded it and shot. Interesting there is that much variance. Maybe it has more to do with the staff thats filling the bags. I don't know the bagging process but maybe they are just using whatever is closest at hand rather than go through an extra step or two to filter the proper size?

From Shotgun Life 2013 article:
As to allowable diameter variation tolerance, SAAMI voluntary performance standards state that game shot (actual shot sizes falling into this category undefined) are allowed a nominal diameter tolerance of ± 0.010 inch, target shot (again actual sizes undefined) are allowed a diameter tolerance of ± 0.005 inch and buckshot (shot sizes defined as No. 4 Buck through No. 000 Buck) are allowed a nominal diameter tolerance of ± 0.015 inch. So a pellet made in the U.S. in the game shot size range could vary a full pellet size designation either way (remember: the variation tolerance is ± 0.010 inch) and still be called that pellet size. Example: according to SAAMI a group of pellets could vary in diameter from as large as No. 4 to as small as No. 6 and still be honorably represented on a bag of loose shot sold for reloading in the U.S. or loaded into American factory ammunition as No. 5 shot. Things get tighter for target shot (typically thought of in the U.S. as being No. 7 pellets or smaller), as the allowable diameter variation tolerance is only a half size (± 0.005 inch). But hey, when you think about it, you want to be pretty discriminating about so-called No. 7½ or 8½ shot for according to SAAMI voluntary performance standards for target shot, a group of pellets could vary from as large as No. 7 to as small as No. 8 and still be designated as a No. 7½ by the manufacturer. In like manner, so-called No. 8½ shot could be as large as No. 8 to as small as No. 9 and still be designated a No. 8½.

As I said in my original post I used a micrometer to measure a sample from each bag, but if you visually compare #9 & #8 shot the difference in size is obvious, at least to me.

is there a weight difference if you weigh the same amount of pellets (lets say 200) from each bag
or is that also the same?

I have not tried weighing a set number of pellets for comparison, though in a given number of pellets from the same lead alloy #8 pellets being larger will weigh more. If you are asking if Hummison #9 is heaver then Lawrence #9, I haven't checked.
I did check the drop weight from my 1/2oz. charge bar using Hummison #9 size shot and adjusted it to drop a full 1/2oz. If the Lawrence shot drops lighter it should mean the shot is a little harder alloy, but pellet count should be the same.
At least this is what I understand to be true.

Don GK; Do you weigh each individual shot drop as well? Bushings can drop as much 20 grains in variation in 1oz.

No, I am maybe a bit fussy about my reloads, but I check weight of drops only when setting up a new load, or when I change lots of powder. I understand that shotshell reloading is a game of averages.

Very much so. Shot in factory ammo can vary that much in size as well. Their was a thread on the trapshooters forum regarding this a while back, the OP was comparing Federal Top Gun, Remington Gun Club, Fiocchi of some sort and Winchester Super-Target. The Top Gun had the biggest variation, that wasn't surprising to me, the quality control on Top Guns has been going downhill for a while, Federal spends their real efforts on their Gold Medal line.

When I was reloading I compared Hummason and Lawrence. Lawrence was more consistent, rounder, harder and cleaner. After some tests at the patterning board with shot from both companies I could not conclude that there was a meaningful difference. This was in an era when Lawrence shot was available in bulk for very good prices at the Grand and a group of us would often share a ton. While I might have preferred Lawrence I never felt hard done by using Hummason.
