looking for a hunting rifle in 223

I have M77's with the matte finish in 4 rifles and a 77/22 rsi with the shiny stainless.... I do agree that the all weather finish scratches easily, but will say that the steel underneath is actual stainless.... not sure on the target grey models, but a simple walnut shell blast will leave you with a shiny stainless finish if that is something you want to do.....

Hmm, might have to try that if I keep it.

I've always preferred blued/walnut, but for use in dirty weather, the stainless/synthetic is growing on me.

Agreed...... all of my stainless rifles (except the 77/22 rsi) have blued and wood counterparts..... They do make a great excuse for owning extra rifles in different chamberings after all...... I mean who doesn't need to own a 243, 257 Roberts and 7-08?
 
okay ive done some reading based on the rifles mentioned

the ruger hawkeye has a pretty impressive background. looks like the action i similar to the model 70. its near the top of the list for me.

as for rem the model seven and 700 VTR look quite capable.
just don't fully like their site its harder to compare the specs.
ive also herd the newer Rems have less then great triggers.

the cz 527 lux and m1 have specs similar to the ruger.

the howa mini black on black looks completely badass!
not sure if they are that common in canada.

I guess now it comes down to what does the best out of the box.
also dont know if ill run into trouble converting some of them to detachable mag
though i haven't herd of any issues.

wood stock may not be the best option for this gun though its not a deal braker.
just looks wise i like the stainless and black stock.




last note ive noticed browning and marlin are not overly mentioned.
im not complaining at that.
just interesting to notice how this thread has taken my attention from some and turned it to others i wouldn't have looked twice at.

Hard to navigate web-sites are frustrating, still good guns, comes down to what you like & fits you best, cheers..

I'm not sure how they compare to the others for quality, but I found mine to be excellent (it's for sale, sadly a 12 twist model). The magazine doesn't leave much room for loading heavier/longer rounds, although the polymer is very sturdy and sits flush in the stock.
 
alot of other reading ive done points to cz cant find howa in canada. i dont like the issues with the 527 bolt handle. still cz comes out ahead.
the x bolts ive seen are in 1:8 twist don't know how that does for lighter rounds. also dont think it will be so simple to get a removable mag on the m77s.

What issues are these? The old ones needed high rings for the bolt handle. All the new ones for a few years now have a redesigned bolt handle. There is no issues.

that's good to know thanks for the correction. on some sights people wrote with mid rings there was minimal clearance making it difficult to cycle the bolt quickly. that's most likely out if date.
people also said the "backward safety" can be annoying. not picking on the the gun every tool has its quirks and this one has very few.
 
I am surprised there are not more votes for the X Bolts. I have a wood stocked one in 223 and the DuraTouch in 204. They are both very accurate with my hand loads. Both have talked coyotes. I find myself carrying the 204 more simply because the wood is too perdy to mark up on my 223.

Up to now I had never considered Browning but am very impressed. Even considered getting the 22-250...
 
The safety is my finger always so I never use the guns safety. On mine I had a viper hs 4-16x44 and medium leupold rings as the lows were to low for that scope. No problems with bolt handle clearance

I looked at the x bolt but from what I heard they are basically impossible to rebarrel so I opted out. I don't have anything in 223 anymore.

I would like to get a good one, I plan on it being my only rifle in 223.

im not sure what barrel is better stainless or blued carbon steel.
also not sure what length and twist are best.
as for price it looks like for what im after starts at 1100.00 then goes up.

i do like that the browning has detachable mags. other then that
most brands have equal sales pitch.

last note id want one that's not to difficult to find parts for i don't know if that's even an issue with the major brands.

Hello i have a cz 527 in 223 they are top of the line
 
I'm sure not many will suggest this but the savage 16 series would fit your criteria. As for accuracy you wont find much better. Has a detachable mag. Some will say they are ugly guns but once you shoot one.... they get really pretty!

Lots of parts avalible for savage's easy to replaced a barrel even.
