30-30 or 35 rem?

I have and use both cartridges, really like both. Hunted deer with both and had very comparable end results with them. Within 100 yards the only notable difference was the size of the hole. I favor the 35 rem just for the extra smacking power and saying "35 Rem" sounds much better.

Unfortunately, this one was neglected bore & chamber wise over the years. The bore took a fair while to clean up to the point where I could put 5 rounds into an inch at 30 yds., but there is a rust ring in the chamber at the neck junction that allows for heavy extraction effort on loads with 165 gr. cast pushed beyond 800 fps. A bummer fer sure. Some previous owner must have put the bugger away after hunting in the rain & left his last shot cartridge in the chamber for a spell to cause a ring like that. Ye should've seen the copper fouling I took out of that tube using Wipe Out everyday for 3 weeks just to get the bore to where it could print tight for at least 5 shots at 50 yds. I reckon the chamber & bore issue on my 94 warrants the upgrade.;)

Paging Ron Smith Enterprises. :runaway:

That sucks. A lot of original blue on the barrel and mag. Definitely worth fixing as it is a nice looking old 94.

There is something to be said about a 35 cal 200 grain bullet that makes a thumping sound on impact. Great for digging the thick woods for deer

Agreed, & the internals are tight and rust free, plus the barrel is straight & wants to shoot. These 26" barreled Winchesters just handle & shoot so well for me that doing up an oldie like my one with a re-bore & chamber to a cartridge from the same time period is a natural thing to do to keep the ole' gal active.:)

my vote goes to the 35 remington, in a nice compact stainless rifle with forest camo laminate stock....almost to purdy to take outside....
when they don't sell what you like....build yer own
