one of the same, the AI version makes headspacing better with lower pressure loads, with the standard chamber you risk setting the shoulder back from the force of the firing pin

Thank you for that! I'm definitely a fan of the Kodiak. Is that a Leupold Ultra Light for a scope? How do you like it. I'm currently using a Leupold VX3i 3.5-10 for hunting, but was thinking a 2-8 type scope would be better. Any thoughts? Also, what do you think of the sling mount attached to the barrel? Any possible effect on accuracy?

Both are very nice! The M70 is on my radar for sure. I'm a huge fan of the 700, I've owned 4 flawless ones so far, but can only find custom ones in .375, and they're few and far in between.

Thank you for posting. Looks like the Ruger also has many qualities I'm looking for. Stainless is a must for me for spending up to a week at a time in the bush. I'm still not sure about plastic stocks though. Or is it composite? This is what's turning me off the Sako Stainless Synthetic.
 
Thank you to everyone who posted! Looks like I'm leaning towards the Sako 85 Kodiak in .375 H&H. Many desirables for me, SS action and barrel, detachable mag, well balanced and laminate stock. I guess I could see if I can get used to the iron sights before scoping it. My ideal rifle would have had a composite stock and slightly longer barrel, but at that price I'm not looking to upgrade anything out of the box.

I'm still open to rifles and optics suggestions, but let's put the .375 debate behind us.
 
With enough abuse the stainless stuff will rust too. Quite often deer season in Manitoba is -20 and snowy, never had any trouble with a blued rifle. Bed it, float the barrel, sand it and seal with linseed oil. Hunt for two weeks in and out of the cold and snow then disassemble and clean after hunting.
 
Of course, just as I'm settling my mind on the Sako 85 Kodiak, I learn of the existence of the Sako 85 Grey Wolf. Oddly enough, it's not listed on the Sako website, last year's production run maybe? Some sites mention the Grey Wolf is the same as the Synthetic Stainless but with an upgraded laminated stock. Does anyone have experience with it?
 
I have a Grey Wolf .300 Win. Mag. Same as the Kodiak except it has a 24.4" (620 mm) barrel and no open sights. Not sure if the forward sling swivel stud is on the forend or on the barrel for the .375 H&H Magnum.

The Ruger Alaskan features a Hogue over-molded stock. It feels like hard rubber -

It's a VX-2 Ultralight 3-9x33mm. It's compact and has a magnification range that pretty much covers any shooting situation. I don't see the sling mount being attached to the barrel affecting accuracy. You will appreciate it being there because there's no chance of your hand getting gored by it under recoil.

Also keep in mind that along with the open sights and barrel band, the Kodiak has the shorter 21.5" barrel whereas the Synthetic Stainless and Greywolf have the 24.5".

I have a Kimber Talkeetna which I feel is superior to the Kodiak in all respects....Very nice rifle.
 
When I was looking at big bores the cz 550 seemed to handle like a rail road tye. Big bulky long and heavy. Great iron sights. Great fit and finish. I bought a custom rifle instead. Sakos are slimmer and felt a lot lighter. Not sure of exact weights

Another option is to re barrel any long action to take the 375 ct. It's only for hand loaders but it's a great bear round and opens up more rifles

Personally if I were to get a new 375 hh it would be a zastava or vanguard.
