It's killing me!; that they arn't here yet so we can have hands on feedback.

What's the consensus on these? will they be better than a VZ, or pretty much preform the same, but with no aftermarket support yet? will their costs go up if another shipment comes in? Is it the same manufacturer as the T97? Will it be the same debacle?! Do i even have money for this gun if its not! will i feel like this with with every new import!! Is it worth taking the plunge!!! im gonna die!!!!:runaway:

I've emailed tactical imports to see if they have any more info, but no reply yet. Hopefully at the beginning of the week they will.

Im looking for a quality (rugged with much more accuracy than an sks) 7.62x39 semi auto without having to buy a XCR.

What do you guys think? any good speculation? Its always fun when a new gun comes to Canada

I wouldnt have your hopes too high....... IF and WHEN they do come in, only then will we know how good the Type 81 will truely be. Research has shown though that when the Chinese were developing the type 81, improving accuracy was one of their goals.

If you google type 81 articles you'll find quite a few different blogs and magazines have done articles on the type 81 over the years. I'm very interested to see what mine will do when it arrives.

Atleast you haven't already pre-paid; I paid in march so how do you think I feel LOL anticipation is killing me

really? i havent found any. ill do some more googling

Well. It's Chinese first of all. Takes the best features from the AK and SKS. It also functions on an early type of "constant recoil"... kinda sorta like the ULTIMAX or AK-107. Where the bolt doesn't contact the rear of the receiver.

Yes there are lots of good articles on the Type 81.

All have claimed it is a wonderful shooting rifle.

NOW IF people took the time to actually look it up and read about it then they wouldn't just suggest it's an sks but it's probably easier guessing then having real facts.

I have held one and disassembled on and I will tell you it is a fantastic pointing, balancing and overall awseome feel of the rifle.

And that isnt a "personal opinion" that is first hand fact

OP - have you considered a Vz58? Seems to hit all the points you outline, and is available for half the price (ish) of an XCR. Rugged, accurate, reliable - and most of the idiots out there think it's an AK.

With the new price they're asking now I'd much rather wait for the type 81 which should hopefully be here during winter.

I've had cz858, vz58 in 5.56 and 7.62x39.. I preferred my CZ858 but I have very high hopes for the Type 81

There are lots of other differences between a Type 81 and an SKS... for example:

- detachable mags with a bolt hold open (best of SKS and AK combined)
- a rear sight finely adjustable for windage and elevation with an elongated peep
type-81-front-682x382.1423256487.jpg

- pistol grip comes standard (duh!)
- adjustable gas system, including the ability to turn it off completely for best accuracy
- military scope mounting is possible without drilling and tapping as the chinese military made add-on optics for these.
- folding stock available standard, makes it easier to transport.
- chrome lined in all the right places, makes corrosive ammo less of a risk (not all SKS or AK's are CL)
- AR15 style safety, which some ppl prefer

Honestly, I'm thinking it's a reasonable buy at $1000 per copy. I would not pay more for a VZ58, personally. This looks to be equivalent, if not superior in some ways. Or at least it is on paper. Nobody here has really seen an example of what will be delivered, only a pre-production sample that the importer has said IS NOT representative of what it will look like in production. So who knows?

China has NO decent domestic hardwood, so the stocks will be that POS Chu-wood we see on their SKS's that dents easily and doesn;t hold up all that well. Hopefull decent synthetic furniture will be available at some point. The chicoms probably have a set they use (?)

Iv definitely considered it. But as Adam134 said, they are similar in price if not more expensive. I would love to know which is better or if they are equal, since i can't get both...yet. I will miss stripper clips with the type 81 and hope they will have smaller mags cause i dont like carrying wasted spaced. Of course id rather just be seen as responsible enough to use that space...but i digress

I was wondering what type of wood they would use ,and you are probably correct in thinking Chu-wood (Catalpa or monkey wood)

That`s too bad,but certainly not a deal breaker.Could be a woodworking project in there somewhere.LOL

What are u suggesting about the optic mounting? How is it supposed to be rigged for mounting optics?

There are both a Chinese military receiver mount and a forward optics rail. I've seen neither in person, but google is my friend.

Looks like the first one has simply been equipped with a AK side rail, although it would be handy, I doubt the Tactical import one will be coming with that feature. :(
