Hey folks,

My Model 39 has had troubles extracting rounds for as long as I can remember.. (I've had this gun since I was 9-10 myself and family long before that and now that Im in my 20s I want to try to fix this little flaw that I've always just accepted and dealt with.)
Sometimes it'll grab the rim of the casing after I fire my round and kick it out and sometimes it just leaves it in the chamber. I'll either A) need to pull it out with a knife or finger nail (very easy) or B) Rack the bolt a few times until it grabs it. So it's odd because it has its days where it'll do 1 in 20 rounds won't extract when I pull the bolt back and then other days it'll be every round or two. I keep it very clean considering it's a family heirloom and I don't shoot it a lot (maybe 5-10 rounds whenever I go out)

Any ideas or tips on fixing it? Was just going to take it to a shop on Tuesday or sometime soon but maybe I can fix it here at home.

I would look closely at the extractor lip and see if it is still sharp and sitting in against the bolt where it should. I am not set up to post pictures but if you want to PM me with your cell or email info I can send you a couple of pictures of a working 39 for reference.

I have worked on these rifles for a lot of years, back in the day when parts were plentiful.
As had been pointed out, check the hook first.
Fire the rifle, rotate the bolt, put some finger pressure on the extractor and see if the case is pulled out. If it does, check to see if there is play in the extractor hole at the base of the bolt handle root. A loose extractor will be inconsistent in extractions.
If there is play, you can either lightly peen the hole or use some shim stock on the outboard side of the extractor.
If you take the extractor out, check to see if there is a grime buildup under it, this will push the extractor away from the rim.

That'd be awesome. I'll PM you my email. Thank you.

I'll have to google how to disassemble the bolt today and take a look at it closer today.

As gunrunner said, a rounded edge on the hook will cause inconsistent extraction and this will vary by batch/make of ammo depending on the case rim squareness and diameter. Also look at the slot in the chamber's edge where the extractor rides up when the round is chambered. If this has corrosion or crud buildup it can prevent the hook, especially one that is worn from grabbing the rim. Again the slight variation in rim squareness/diameter in ammo batches/makes can exacerbate the problem. As an aside G96 is a great cleaner for assemblies that are hard to take apart or even more importantly, hard to put back together.

I was looking at it closer and it might actually be damaged, took 2 pictures so I'll post them for reference.
