The last year or two has been kind of rough on me, so Santa decided that a RRSP should give it's all so I could have a good christmas. And you know it worked. My new toy has a sample target at 50 yards with 5 Lapua Midas+ into 1/8". This I think I can live with. I want to make the 1/2" challenge and this one should do it.
With a 6 power scope and cheap federal ammo I got 5 Federal into a 1/2", I have now upgraded to a 6x24 scope and I am going to play around for a while.
Life is too short to put up with ugly inaccurate rifles.

That is indeed a classy rifle.
YIKES!!!! You know, "golf" is a 4 letter word Bull's-Eye! lol I know lots of avid shooters, and even more avid golfers. However, I've never met a guy who dry-docked such a nice rifle and went golfing instead..for several years!
Reminds me of that quote; "A golf course is the willful and deliberate misuse of a perfectly good rifle range."

I bought a Savage MKII TRR-SR at the end of December, with the intent of being more competitive at the .22 precision matches my club (Thunder Bay Combat Club) hold throughout the Summer. So my goal is to build that gun up and hopefully be within the top 4 in every match. I also want to grow these matches and get more people participating.
Other than that, I want to turn my 10/22 into an Appleseed "Liberty Training Rifle" even though I probably won't be able to attend an Appleseed this year. Also want to get a Magpul X22 for one of my RIA M22s and make it a nice little hunting gun.

Playing around with some of the ammo I have kicking around here, it looks like it will make the 1/2" challenge with the cheap stuff. I did buy a box of the Midas + when I bought the gun, I think I will learn to shoot it with the cheap stuff before I break out the good stuff.
I wouldn't be ashamed at all... I love .223, the only centerfire I own. (if you don't count shotguns) Instead of buying the Anschutz I was planning on, I ended-up upgrading the scope on my .223 instead. Tough decision, but the one I made. All my range time lately has been testing Hornady's 35gr NTX bullets loaded on the hotter end of the spectrum. Results have been very good.
Gophering? Well..my gophering partner can't make it this year so I may not get out to AB in 2017. I'm sure the gophers will appreciate that..the few we didn't get in 2016 that is! lol
I bought a lot of rimfire ammo just a few years ago, so I haven't been keeping up on pricing lately. I was somewhat surprised to see that .22 is costing what 17HMR used to cost. The 17HMR is at or close to $0.50 a shot now.

I agree, I sold my 17HMR when I realized I could load .223 Rem. for less than the cost of the .17HMR.
Has anybody used a lee hand press for reloading? I can't afford much at the moment and have been thinking of trying reloading small bore centre fire rounds again like 223 and see how cheap I can make them cost per shot wise. I'd like to blow some gophers up with a little more oomph than my 22 rimfires lol should have kept my 204 ruger rifles. Best darn varmint caliber on this planet! I'd like to try a 17 hornet as well and see how sheeeep I can make those loads.
I can't comment on that kit, but did get set-up for reloading on a budget, and over about a 2 year period. Used Lee powder measure, used RCBS "Partner" press ($65, came with .223 Rem. dies) etc. Only "new" gear was a Lyman digital scale with built-in trickler, an RCBS hand-priming tool, calibers and some small Lee hand tools/trimmer, chamfer etc. A couple of years into it, I added a new Lyman case trimmer and an el-cheapo Lyman tumbler. It's a cheap, single-stage press I planned on upgrading..but it's worked so well for .223/.204R/.243Win that I have no plans to get anything else at this time.
As for what the per-round cost is? I buy my powder 1lb. at a time, my bullets 100 at a time...but seem to get lots of life from my brass. I don't really concern myself with the per-round cost because I can only load slowly...and might shoot 4-5 groundhogs per outing. If I moved out to S. Alberta, some guns would be sold to finance a progressive press!
You'd be reloading 3-4 nights a week to feed a gopher gun at the rate I reload!22 mag seems to be on the shelves. Was gonna buy one a couple years back but never saw anything to feed it with. 17 hmr was kinda thin for a bit too. Might look into one or the other. Think I have enough 22s. Until the next one comes along.
My goal is to achieve the 1/2 moa challenge with my cz452 V, it is getting a new optic (leupold vx3i 6.5-20x40) to help me out. Second goal is to figure out how to get the trigger fixed on my brand new TacSol X-ring and shoot 1/2 moa all day long with that.
