Thinking of getting one of these for my son to hunt deer with, he likes the "gold look". I know there are some golden Winchester commemoratives but they make me want to barf in general.

Anybody have anything to say about the Henry brass levers in 30-30, 357, 44, or 45 Colt?

I own Henrys in 357/38 16 inch barrel and 30-30 in 20 inch barrel and they are heavy to carry around. If you dont mind the weight Henys are great guns:
Henry parts are much easier to get than new production Winchesters.
The Henry action is much smoother out of the box than any other lever gun on the market.
Upgrades like aftermarket sights or scope rails are easy to find.
The customer service is outstanding.

Excellent rifles... I have a steel .45/70 and a brass Big Boy .44 RM. Smooth as silk and very accurate... I shoot the 225 FTX over 24.0 gr H110... good deer load... if it is for deer, the .30/30 or .44 Mag is the way to go.

Yup, with octagon barrels, they are about a pound heavier than a Marlin .336C.

Internally, they ARE a Marlin 336C, apart from the transfer bar hammer safety and the lack of a loading gate.

Just sold my steel .45/70 and have a new brass .45/70 on the way... when it comes in, I can compare it to my BB .44.

I've only owned a couple BB in 44 mag with the brass receiver. They're nice, but ridiculously heavy due to the chunky receiver and the straight, un-tapered, octagon barrel results in a gun that handles like a road chisel. The magazine tube is made of the cheapest and flimsiest of lawn furniture turbine I've ever seen. They run very smoothly, but I sold mine and switched to A miroku 1886 for 45-70 and a marlins 1894CB in 357. They're superior guns and I would recommend them over the Henry.

That being said, their customer service is excellent, if you have any issue with your purchase you will be well taken care of.

I hope you post a review or some impressions of that gun. If I were to buy a Henry, the brass .45-70 would be the one...

I have trouble accepting the tube-loading feature of these guns, but I might make an exception for that beauty. :)

If clearly biased, but what makes you think you won't like the tube load?

Tube-loading is the only thing about my Marlin 39 that I don't care for. I never liked that feature even when, as a youngster, I started shooting with a Cooey tube-load bolt.

My first Marlin centerfire was a revelation; I loved the loading gate!

The loading gate is really only useful if you want to put several rounds into the gun in a hurry.
Because it's easier to load the whole mag with the tube and just as easy to single load a henry.
Less parts to worry about for me

Plus, gate loading damages bullets... and unloading a tube, is pure joy.

I'm not saying you guys are wrong, or that one is better, or faster, or simpler or anything-er...

I just like one and don't like the other! When it comes to buying another gun, that criterion trumps everything. :)

And I prefer to unload them out the muzzle. :)

Not trying to convince you of anything, but centerfire tube loading is soooo much more pleasant than rimfire tube loading, particularly in .45/70.

From an aesthetic/nostalgic perspective I vastly prefer the gate loading on my 94's... from a practical/utiliterian perspective I will take tube loading every time.

Ah! I hadn't even considered the idea that nice big centerfire rounds would make the tubeload option more palatable than dinky little .22's.

Plus, of course, I never met a .45-70 I didn't like, so maybe I should re-consider. Where did you get yours, hoyt?

Bought mine new from the LGS... I try to keep new purchases local, if they can't get it, I will try Prophet River next... Clay can het these in... he has ordered me one of the New Henry break action singles in .44 Mag.
