350 REM Mag? NEW ? added

My 600 fits perfectly sideways across my quad I use for it a moose rig very easy to carry in the bush. Using TAC under Barnes 200 Gr. TSX @2800 FPS for moose medicine, I stick with the 200 grs. due to short mag mag length. It will kill!

I called Ruger... made my way through a loop of multiple departments, neatly avoiding Ruger International and finally got the proper part numbers off and old relic stored away in the parts department... then gave the part numbers to Snapshots to order in.

Neat. Did you happen to remember what the smallest ID for the band was? I'd like one for my ruger compact but the muzzle diameter is only .525. NECGs smallest band is .551.

You won't get one for the compact... you would have to build up the barrel or the ID of the band to make it work... would look clunky IMO. To make the barrel band front sight work on this .350 Rem Mag, I have to enlarge the band ID or recountour the entire barrel... I am tempted to recontour the barrel.

I suppose you could make a 35 Whelen carbine - just cut the barrel down on your standard action length bolt rifle.

Well, my fat fingers hit send before clarifying the intent of the Model600.

Get a Remington in 350 Remington Magnum in a Model 600 and the envy will be immense.

I wouldn't chop anything down to create a carbine, let alone one in .35 Whelen.

.35 Whelen COAL is 3.340". Would this round fit in the short action model 600?

Be tough to do. I rebarreled a 600 in 284 Win, lengthened the mag box, opened up the receiver a bit front and rear, managed to get 3.2" out of it. Basically gives me 280 Rem + velocities. Great lightweight goat gun before the factories started building theirs. - dan

Every one (factory ruger) I have used has been way undersized - ie needed to be bored out as you suggest. But that is a whole lot easier than turning the entire barrel down and you don't lose your factory printing.

Yes, easier, but I am thinking about taking a little weight off at the same time... the barrel band stud will have to be bored out also... but I have a wizard doing the work.

How much are the bands undersized? I doubt the weight savings will be noticeable/worth it, especially since the bands will need to be reamed/cleaned up anyway (as the insides come quite crudely finished)- but of course that's only my opinion. I hope you post some pics of the finished product.

I don't have your skills or know how!

I just fitted a stainless Ruger banded front sight to a barrel that measures 0.560" (Ruger #1A) and the sight needed to be bored out quite a bit, but I never measured it before starting. You may luck out and get one that could be fitted to your rifle.

The turn down is mostly a reflection of where it is going... there is the option of an appropriately contoured Douglas addition, but I am inclined to keep the factory barrel... and just make it work... nothing is set at this point. McMillan has the blueprints for a MKII short action magnum action with standard contour channel, it will require a little work no matter which way I go with it.
