Looking for a No5 MkI 'jungle carbine'

No, most No 1 rifles carry it on the right side of the wrist.

No 4 rifles carry manufacture dates and refurb dates on the left flat of the receiver.

Question- I see some jungle carbines painted Black....& some are blued.....what is the correct way when restoring one. Will the painted black one be more pleasing than the Blued one for re-sale ??? Or...it doesn't matter ?

The black paint is a milspec paint called Suncorite, which was used by the Brits back then. It would be difficult to replicate. Either finish would be considered authentic for the period...

Here be my free-be. :)

Depending on where the rifles have seen service, Lee Enfields can have stamps indicating dates/units/sold out of service marks etc just about anywhere on the rifle that has room. Some of them are like reading history books. Especially some of the rifles that have been to the far east.

After doing some research on the subject of finishes, I found the Suncorite had been replaced by Bonderite O-PC 528 Black RFU. The Suncorite has been discontinued, from what I read..

Found a collector on here who is selling me an absolutely perfect No5 Mk1. Not one blemish on it and it only has had two owners before me, bought in a mummy wrap and probably never fired by the original owner. Collector had it for 25 years and never fired it as well. I'll post up some pics as it as it arrives. Bayonet is brand new never sharpened as well which is awesome. Thank you all for the help everyone, this thread helped me find this rifle.

Now hoping to find a sling, canvas carry case and any other details this rifle may have came with...

Good on you!! The sling should be easy, it's the same as a No1 or No4 sling and are not uncommon, the carry case may be a challenge.

Thanks! Yeah I'm trying to find a sling in good shape, thinking about a repro but I think it is worth finding a clean original. I am waiting for pics of a carry case from a member here as it turns out, hopefully it what Im looking for. I want to get an extra magazine as well to use at the range so I don't ding up the numbers matching original. This site is a great resource.

Looking forward to seeing pictures of your No5, they are sweet little battle rifles.

I have a 10/46 ROF(Suncorite).

I believe there were several hundred used by 1st Airborne during Market-Garden at Arnhem in Sept/44, their combat debut,.. and by May 1945 the 1st AB had completely switched to the No5 rifle, you can see the Para's marching in Oslo Norway, matching bayonets and slings attached,... after after their uncontested landing 2 days after the War ended in Europe.
It had a pretty good workout after the war in Malaya and other parts of the Empire and even in Palestine before the withdrawal. Kind of the un-sung hero at the start of the Cold War for Britain. We all know the No4Mk1, and the FN-FAL that replaced the L/E, but many forget the role the little No5 carbine played right after the big one was over.

Again I'm looking forward to seeing one that shows how it looked when the factory packed her away many moons ago. Try and get an original sling for it as well if it as you describe it.
