Noobie Scope question here, just bought this Rem 783 and it came with a No-Name 3-9x40 scope (which is off to a new owner) so I'm left with 1" rings and I'm not sure if I have Low/Med/High rings... there was ample room with the cheap scope.

I have 2 scopes in mind for this, one is a Vortex 2.5-10x44 w/30mm rings (I realize I'll need new 30mm rings, don't know about the height). Also a Leupold 3-9x50 w/1" rings, I seriously doubt I can get by with the rings I have now due to the 10mm difference in objective.

What height do I have and what Rings would I need for these 2 particular scopes that are in stock???

There is approx 1cm from the base to the center where the scope rests. Unsure if this is how they measure them...

Scope that shipped with it, 3-9x40:

there is no real standard for high/medium/low etc. most companies heights differ slightly. really you have to decide on scope first, then think about rings. if you're going with the leupold, buy the scope and see if it works with the current rings. if they are too low, you will know how much taller you need them to be and you can go buy some to suit. if you go with the vortex, medium will be a safe bet, but low may work too.

I'd probably get new rings regardless, as those things look pretty bad.

Check out the dimensioned drawing for the VX-2 3-9x50mm compared to the scope you currently to see if the rings will work. Looks like you will be using Weaver rings, so check out their application chart -

The factory scope was shipped out today to a new owner, I didn't take any measurements... sounds like I should have.

And I'm sure the rings are 'cheapest no-name available' just like the scope was. However, the scope seemed solidly mounted on the firearm, from the factory.

From the Weaver application chart -

Ring Size Saddle Height Fits Objective Lens Size

1" EXTRA HIGH 0.560 THRU 50MM

Measure the saddle height for the rings you have and compare. If it's =/> 0.56" then your rings should work with the VX-2 3-9x50mm scope.

If the "Saddle Height" is "B" in the diagram, it's too short. I'd need about 13-14mm instead of the 10mm I have.

these #'s are just guidelines and rings often end up too high in my experience... it also depends on how high your bases are, the profile of your barrel and how long your scope is.

Should be able use the scope drawing to determine whether the rings you have will work. Might be a close fit. For example, I was able to use medium height ring mounts for my Nikon Monarch III 4-16x42mm scope on my 300 WM Sako Grey Wolf with about 3mm clearance from the barrel -

Might consider taking your rifle and scope to your LGS to get the proper rings.

Because I'm going to be buying online, was hoping to get the appropriate rings with the scope and hopefully not have many headaches. I emailed one sponsor about my rifle platform, the scope at his store and which rings would be the best fit. Hopefully I get a response.

My friend who is also a beginner, bought an optic at another sponsor, told them the rifle and they called the manufacturer (CZ) to see which rings to get... he's still waiting on delivery so we'll see.

A scope being up too high is bad for a good cheek weld, so I'm hoping I get the right setup.

I bought rings online. Had a leupold vx-3, 3.5-10x50... I went on leupold's website and put in the rifle and scope I had, and it is supposed to tell you what rings you'd need of theirs. Not the case lol. I wanted the PRW rings... it said I needed high. Not even close... Had an easy 3/8" between the barrel and the end of the scope
