i am not sure if i should post this here or mil-surps.

i am big time into Vietnam stuff and military shotguns.maybe ever since i was about 7 or 8 when i first seen 'bunny' use that shotgun on Platoon. So after seeing all the cool shotguns out there i came across this Duck-bill shotgun and knew i had to have it. its one of the rarest shotguns so buying a real one is out of the question. i decided to see if i could have one custom made so i went to Gary Howe at shooters choice in Waterloo and he built this for me.
Its an Ithaca 37(slam fire) with extended mag tube and the duck bill choke. its almost perfect to me. His work is top notch!
only thing left to do is get it parkerized in the spring time and get a sling.

Chief Watson. i am reading his book 'point man' right now.
about trigger control if you see where his finger is its actually on the action release. on the ithica the release is really set back not like on the 870. no chance for brush to snag it.
 
when i get out to shoot it i will have some. i might get a video of the slam fire if i can do it fast enough.
 
That Ithaca is awesome!

Anyway like the idea of a duckbill spreader choke, but the fact that they more or less limit you to #4 buckshot and probably cut your effective range in half make them a niche item.

SEAL Watson (who I regret not meeting when he was alive) for example typically used his Ithaca when engagement ranges were bound to be 15 yards max.

He was a plank holder and the first senior noncom (Chief) in Team 6 (when there was one).

He basically forgot more about unconventional ops than most will ever know.

As an aside - and just to blow your mind on trigger discipline, the Russians (Spetsnaz "Alpha" and "SOBR") train to patrol with their fingers pressed forward, inside the guard, but then, they shoot at each other too.

They "ND proof" them in training by having someone pushing, pulling, beating on and even throwing them to the ground as they keep their finger inside the trigger guard.

Anyways I want to see a patterning video!
 
Supposing there was enough interest here on CGN, do you think we could get an order for them together? I'd be interested in one.

The Gator chokes awere available a few years ago through one of the forum vendors, not sure if that's still the case.

Though personally I'd want something that was tuned towards using larger buckshot, at least #1, and that let you use slugs in a pinch.
 
When I test it out I am going to use #4 buck and some low recoil OO. I plan to use some plated shot aswell because i know they used steel shot in nam. I'm not sure about a slug yet I want to test the others first.
 
First you have to find a supply of old Ithacas. I had a heck of a time finding the right model.

I'd avoid using slugs if I were you, even steel shot might be pushing it.

As you might know, the XM257 #4 buck load used in Vietnam specified extra hard and double plated pellets.

There's no commercial load that offers those anymore that I'm aware of, so your patterns may not be as consistant as the service load.
