Solo Bear Hunt by Canoe

My solo bear experience was to walk up on a yearling grizzly in Kluane National Park. It bolted downhill away from me, while I wondered what the heck else was in the valley that made it so skittish. I turned around and hiked back out.

Great story about the effort and the planning. We don't hunt to kill. We hunt to live. You had a fantastic opportunity in those woods and on the water. Going back?

Going to try the same thing at a different location - lots of crown land around and that way it keeps it fresh. Also thinking about doing a canoe hunt for whitetail and possibly moose. The moose though would require a fair bit more effort as to guarantee a tag I would likely have to drive 20-24 hours, be in a group of 2 or more, use archery gear and be prepared to stay for at least a week at a time.
 
Super cool OP - way to go. I did a solo hunt for bear late Summer 2016. I reckon I was 2 weeks behind them. This year I will try again in the same area. Perfect size animal for one guy I reckon especially as I wouldn't want to be dressing / butchering and packing a big beastie to the canoe with his buddy around. Congrats!

The price you got is great and would like to get some for next season as well.

I buy it from the feed mill in Grand Valley. Most feed mills have it. You usually have to bring your own containers. Price will flucuate some with the market and the location of the feed mill. Usually the price is $0.30 to $0.50 per pound. I got that batch at the low point in the cycle.

I normally buy it right before the season so i know it is fresh.

Okay, thanks for explaining. That must be a new rule since I left Ontario a few years ago. I wonder if they really had an actual problem with bears being baited too close to houses and trails...or if they just need to enact new rules each year and are running out of things to restrict/regulate/ban? :)

My wife just reminded me how similar your tale is to mine, when I took my very first bear many years ago. I was using a Jeep, not a canoe. I was so pumped when I got him out to the Jeep that I just picked him up and heaved him in. By the time I got back to camp, either he tripled in weight or I burned off my adrenaline...I couldn't budge him! :)

We won't go into the fact that I happily motored back to my camp...but then I had to make the round trip again to retrieve my gun, pack, binoculars and all my other gear, which I had left at the bait location! Excitement is a wonderful thing...:)

Edited to add: I wonder if one of CGN's resident doomsayer wannabe-lawyers will report me to the RCMP...I'm sure that driving away and leaving a rifle in the bush contravenes the Criminal Act. It was over 30 years ago, but still...:)

Great hunt and great story.

I too love canoe hunting, great way to get away from the crowds and quiet.

I must have read this story a dozen times, it still gets me excited about your hunt. Maybe I will get a chance to do something like that myself............... in the meantime I will live it through your tale.
