That may be the price that won the US Army contract.

If they can sell them at that price, what does it actually cost to make these plastic-framed handguns?

While they are obviously undercutting to the max to break the Glock monopoly, they must still be making some profit.

When you are talking about contracts of this scale, there is a lot more in play.
For example, When AVRO was building the Arrow, they could not afford to buy the required amount of metals needed for the aircraft, so They bought the companies that produced it.

It is just one example, but goes to show, it isn't the cost of production... it is the industry.

Now I don't know if that is the way it is working here, but when the US is paying 580 million, I am sure SIG can afford to buy a company or two to bring costs down.

Whichever pistol is used by police and/or military forces, will have a huge civilian market that will be price gouged.

Bulk of the cost in firearms is in engineering, design, development, tooling, marketing, liability insurance and other overhead. Unit direct material and labor is cost is probably way less than $100.

A huge half billion dollar contract to one military customer saves a lot of marketing overhead. And think of the promotional value of being selected as THE pistol.

So Sig may break even or lose a tiny bit, on the U.S. Military deal, but they'll easily make that up many times over in future worldwide civilian sales.

This.

Particularly about the R and D costs involved.

The actual cost of manufacturing is but one cost component. Too, the more you make the more your average cost comes down to a point before rising. I was told some years ago a full page ad in Guns & Ammo at one point cost $50,000 US. Now I suspect that might have been the price of an ad in all Wolf Publishing gun mags but it gives you an idea where money can be spent. R&D does cost as well as customer service, distributing and wholesale/retail mark up. The suggested MSRP for the 320 RX is going to be north of $1,200 Cdn before tax I was told today. Expected arrival date June/July/17. I still want one and the line forms on the right.

Many European companies will bid below cost to secure a long-term government contract, then gouge the customer on spare parts and service.

I believe a military contract normally includes all spare parts for a projected number of rounds fired (or years of service), plus extra parts for contingencies and losses, and lots of spare magazines. This is to assure the military that they will have adequate parts and magazines supplies for a long time. Even if the original manufacturer closes down (heaven forbid). It is common sense and that's how military logistics people think. At least that's what I would include in the contract package.

Service is usually done by factory trained military armorers, except for unusual and unforeseen problems where the supplier will bring in their tech guys, and this should also be part of the orignal package.

There you go, the price gouging I mean. I can only imagine how long the line will be, because I won't be in it.

It's got great specs and probably the ###iest aesthetics of any polymer gun. although I am not impressed by the high Sig-signature bore line. I'll wait till the initial excitement has abated. Still happy with my G17 gen 3 and looking forward to play with a soon to be mine FNS9L. But I would love an complete Unboxing, dismantling and range reviewand video when yours arrives.

Easy rider...you have a point...sadly I want to try one sooooo bad..but even I will wait until they start turning up on ee for sensible pricing....

The $1200 includes th SIG Optic sight and from what I gather it is a step up on what is out there now. The Germans do have a reputation for engineering. If you use $400 for the Optic the gun is going to sell for about what you pay for a Glock 17 at today's prices and you are getting 2017 technology vs 1980ish.

The SIG 320 bore axis doesn't seem to be any higher than the Glock's just saying.

Gently used after six months I am guessing $900 - $1,000.
