I usually jam a bullet into the rifling on a 280 rem case to keep the case moving forward but found i am having premature case failures. Is there a better way to fire form. Not interested in the cream of wheat method. Can i neck up the 280 brass to 30 cal then back down to 280 and leave a false shouler to hold the case against the bolt?

The AI chamber should be set up for a crush fit on standard 280 brass. If it isn't run a 280 case through a 30 cal expander ball to expand the neck and the resize the case creating a false shoulder.

The method you use should work fine, if your having case failures after a few firings; you might try annealling the brass before fire forming. Loading a bullet backwards is not required, 10 to 15 thou into the land is fine.
Quality of brass makes a difference.
Enjoy.

It should be crush fit within the reason of course.
Also, just for fire forming try to use Federal primers, they are much softer and fire pin won't transfer as much energy to shove the brass deeper into chamber if you used other kind of primers like CCI for instance.
Again, for fire forming use hard brass like Remington, Lapua and such and avoid soft one like Federal....
GR8 2c worth....

Decap and size the 280's
Anneal the 280's
Prime the 280's
Charge with between 10-12 gr of Red Dot
Fill the rest of the case with cream of wheat.
Put a tuft of Kleenex in the case mouth.
Go out and shoot winged insects on a sunny summer day.

This is what I did with with new norma Brass for my fclass gun. Chamber cut with a original 280 ackley Improved reamer design not the newer SAMMI.

Run through 280 Fl size die
prime cases
3 fill with 11gr of tightgroup
fill case with blue shop towel to the btm of the neck pack in slightly
load and shoot, nice shoulders, but experimented with charges and went with 13.8gr which gave nice crisp square shoulder. No wrecked cases that was after 300 cases.
