My friend said he was crashing through some bush last fall and the sling screw pulled out of his stock. He didn't say if it was forend or butt.

How do you repair that?

1) Wipe paste wax or shoe polish on swivel screw threads, being careful not to fill the thread grooves.

2) Break a toothpick into a few pieces.

3) Mix up two drops of epoxy.

4) Smear epoxy on pieces, and put remainder into hole.

5) Place pieces around the outer edge of the hole in the stock.

6) Turn the sling screw, on which the wax has now dried, back into the hole.

7) After a few hours, before the epoxy bis fully cured, turn the screw out, lightly wax it again and turn it back into the stock.

Have done quite a few over the years, and never had one pull out.

I have a parker hale safari in .308 that had the same thing happen when I had a bipod mounted on it.

I tried the method in post #2 and it didn't hold.

I don't really use the gun much so I never bothered monkeying with it much further but eventually I'm just going to put a steel backer plate and use a 'machine screw' type stud (as opposed to the 'wood screw' type).

While it's a nice rifle otherwise, I'm skeptical about the quality of wood used in the stock

If it is the forend swivel, replace the woodscrew with a machine screw type with a nut inside the forend channel.

If it is the rear, drill out the hole, epoxy in a piece of dowel, drill and remount the swivel. Use a dowel of such a size that it won't be visible.
