So I think I finally decided that I wanted to get a Mossberg 590a1 SPX as my first (and likely only) shotgun. The only problem is that I can't find it anywhere...

I have contacted most of the stores in SW Ontario now and a couple outside looking for this shotgun in the 20" version with bayonet. Everyone says that they have had them on backorder with no ETA for over a month now.

Any thoughts on why no one is able to get stock in on them now?

Also, a question for those more knowledgeable: which exact model does the US army actually use? Is it the 20" SPX because it fits a bayonet?

I'm still technically debating between the 9 shot 20" and the newer 7 shot 18.5" versions, but I'm leaning towards the 20" now. At only 1.5" longer and with the extra two rounds, it seems like a better deal. The pricing seems to be not too far off each other either, with the 20" costing around $100 more than the 18.5" version.

Anyone know of a good deal on either of these? Or even just a place (anywhere in Canada) that has them in stock for a reasonable price?

The SPX have been getting cleared out on sale by various dealers and shops for the past year and a half. I think it may be a fading model with limited shelf life left.

I would get the 18.5" and spend the extra $100 on a mag extension. It will be a better balanced shotgun than the 20".

Would be exactly my advice.

After handling both the 18.5" balanced much better so I went with that. Have now lost all interest in owning a 20" version.
That 1.5" might not seem like much however, for a handy HD shotgun it makes a huge difference imo.

You may try to get the 590A1 with the 18.5 inch barrel with removable cyl accu choke. I got 1 from another nutz, like new. Came from the factory with a +1 mag extension but i bought a +2 extension and will have then 7+1 shells capacity, pretty good setup for a 18.5 barrel. You may check the exchange forum, fews 590A1 came up for sale recently.

All the stores I have talked to have said that they've had the SPX model on backorder for a month or so now, so they seem to want them still too... Maybe just Mossberg is slowing production on them. The US stores still seem to have plenty though.

I've seen that 18.5" for $730 at one store online with the ghost sights. I was considering it for sure... but the price difference seemed small compared to the bigger tube, and I figured 1.5" wouldn't make much difference aside from slightly more weight.

Now I'm hearing that the difference is actually pretty big. It makes the choice difficult again having not actually handled any... the stores are all sold out of 590a1 anywhere close to me it seems.

I do plan on tacticooling it and the bayonet is a nice touch. I'll be making it shorter overall as well because of that.

Does anyone know if I can get a tactical choke (stand off) in the accu-choke system? I haven't found a lot of info for it really.

You can get a Carlson tactical choke for Mossberg but beside the cool factor, not much use imao, same goes for the bayonet... A 590A1 with 18.5 barrel (mod 50774) will have 6+1 capacity and you can change choke for added versatility. You can install a S&J extension to get 7+1 shells with the convenience of a 18.5 inch barrel. Tacticooling can be fun but dont forget, simpler is better! Again its only my opinion:)

5+1, plus extension then becomes 7+1

To the OP, There is a nice SPX with Magpul furniture on the EE right now.

I forgot to mention, the 50774 mod came with a +1 extension from the factory so its a 6+1. This model appeared last year from what i know.
And yes the one on the EE would be a very good deal!

I see. I took a look at it, given the size of the extension you would think it should be a 7+1, I can't believe you only get 1 extra round out of it. The 2 round SJ extension I have is also flush with the end of the barrel but holds two extra rounds vice just one.

The factory extension that came with the Mossberg isnt flush with the barrel. The pic on the Mossberg site show a flush extension but its not what you get,the extension is in reality about 1 inch shorter, so that's why i cant put 7 in the mag.

Thanks to everyone for telling me about alternatives and the SPX on the EE now.

I have more questions now though.

What's a good price to pay for an 18.5" 590a1? It also has a parkerized finish right?
What is the difference between the sights on the 18.5" vs the 20" SPX?
Which version does the US military use?

Now I'm leaning back towards the 18.5" but that's possibly just because I can find it online in one store at least... also the S&J extension is made in Canada, so that's nice. It would cost about the same as the 20" SPX at that point, but doesn't come with a nice bayonet (I know it's not actually that useful but still...)

I bought a 590A1 18.5 inch barrel with factory mag extension for $575 shipped, shotgun has no wear, barely used. And parkerized finish.
Both the 18.5 and 20 inch barrel can have bead or ghost ring sight.
Military for sure use the 20 inch barrel but its very possible that 18.5 versions are issued also, might depend on requirements of various unit. If you do somes reaserch, you will find that the Mossberg 500,18.5 inch barrel is also widely used in the US Army. Also, not every 590A1 in the army had bayonets issued with them.

Bottom line, you will be good with any 590A1 you come across so take one that fit your wallet and enjoy!
