Thanks for the input.... I have normal(?) sized hands.... I'm not overly excited by the calibre, but at that price point I'm figuring why not?

The .40 is/ was a solution to a currently non-existent problem. It was suppose to be a compromise between the 9mm and .45. It was suppose to be the 10mm round initially after the FBI adopted it. Then when they noticed that their agents were complaining about the recoil of the bigger round, it was downloaded and the .40 was born.
This was in the 1980s. With modern 9mm ammo, the .40 recoil, cost and 2 fewer rounds in a mag has made it less desirable as a defensive round. It's popularity has since waned as agencies have gone back to the 9mm.
That's why the supposed hate.
The round is snappier for new shooters, slightly more costly and since we only punch paper here, unless you are qualifying for Power Factor, it is a less desirable round now compared to 20 years ago.

PS I personally don't hate it at all. I'm starting to shoot my G22 and USP more as I actually enjoy the recoil. Having said that, the first time I shot .40 was in 2008 and I couldn't wait to finish my 50 rounds!
 
Bought a new G22 off of here about a month ago. I too read all negatives about the 40 cal but now after shooting one it's my favourite.

My man Still Alive pretty much nailed the pros and cons. In my humble opinion (and this is a completely irrational thought making process) loading a magazine full of 9mm is the least fulfilling thing I've ever done at a gun range. I have a .45, a .40 and a 9mm. and when you load up a mag of .45ACP you feel about ready to take on the world. You load up a mag of 9mm and you feel like you're handling a children's toy.

For perspective as to what the Hell I'm talking about:

I gave up on 40 cal, id save your money and wait for a lightly used 17 to come up on the EE. I only paid 650 for mine.

Maybe you're not actually a Glock guy, you just like polymer guns and you're actually a HK guy! Tell you what, I'll trade you my USP in 9 for you G19 :)

Don't worry about the 12.6. I'll happily provide a compliant barrel.
 
I got the black friday deal on one, about $700 all in. Really like the .40,.to me, feels allot more Fun? Probally the recoil to as stated. Over alwayz shooting 9. The awesome thing is, just pick up a 9mm conversion barrel and thats all you need to shoot both.

I see your point but the G22s are closer to the $600 mark. As a rule, .40 guns sell for less than their 9mm counterpart. ( part of the .40 hate, as you put it). The G17 tend to list at the $750 mark. What they actually sell for and how long they stay on the EE is another topic altogether.

Just curious, how much more recoil with a .40 than a 9mm in your opinion? I have shot a 9mm so I was curious if there was that much more recoil.
