Can You Help Me Decide? PU Sniper, or 91/30 + SVT-40

I need help making a decision here. I recently added a Mosin Nagant PU Sniper to my safe, and I have mixed feelings. I definitely made a stretch to get it, I'm on a tight budget. I already have a '39 Tula in a laminate stock that I like (it's currently for sale in the EE while I try to make up my mind). Its a shooter, and I like shooters. However the PU is very, very, very cool. Unbelievably cool. So my crisis is... I can only afford to keep 1 of them right now. I want to shoot my guns, I do not want to own a gun thats going to collect dust. Do I sell the PU, which gives me a little extra cash for ammo and to help fund the SVT-40 I want to buy next... or do I sell the regular Mosin to help me afford the PU purchase I just made.

Which would you choose? PU Sniper with a bit of ammo. OR Regular 91/30 and SVT-40 and some ammo.

It works out to be about the same price. So thats my dilemma, because I want an SVT-40 badly, waiting is not my strong suit, and I do not want to be murdered by the wife.

I would personally go with the 91/30 and SVT-40 myself. It gives you a bit of variety in the x54 calibre plus you dont have to worry as much about wear and tear that may devalue the PU. You can always toss a scope on your 91/30 down the road when funds allow to give you the "PU experience" too.

I just bought a PU sniper from Tenda. The trigger is much nicer than the standard 91\30 trigger. The bore is beautiful and these rifles were selected for their accuracy so it should shoot decently. I'll eventually pick up a regular 91\30 too. Your laminate Mosin is a beauty. Why not keep it and get the SVT-40 now and then save a bit and get the PU sniper as your next gun if you're still interested?

Keep the sniper. Sell the 91/30 laminated. If I would have waited I would be buying your laminate Mosin. Get a credit card and put the svt-40 on it. Then try your best not to buy more rifles. I know it's hard to quit. I counted up my mosins I thought I only had 6 but there is 9 in the safe. Not sure where the other 3 got in there. It's an addiction but every rifle goes up in value so buy as many as you can now because in a few years they will double in price. I bought a Mosin a few years ago for $149 and now they are going for $220 and up.

The 7.62x54R mm surplus ammo prices go through the roof. A few months ago I paid about $.35-39 per round , nowadays you'll not find anything cheaper than about $.50 per round. If you stick to the Mosin&SVT very soon you'll have not enough money for buying ammo. Sell your 7.62x54R rifles.
My $.02

Or start reloading

Keep the sniper, love mine, especially with a timber trigger. Yes, it's like lipstick on a pig but makes it a very good shooter.

50 cents a round is still dirt cheap for a high powered centerfire round. .308 is over a buck , .30-06 is over a buck, even .243 is expensive.

91/30 PU snipers are back down in price because of a recent import. Once this import dries up (~200 left at the distributor last I checked) the price will go up again.

91/30 infantry rifles are drying up as well but demand is low as there are many thousands in Canada. In 1-2 years the used price will be $300-$350 but that's much cheaper than the PU will be.

SVT-40s are also rapidly increasing in value.

Financially your best decision is to sell the 91/30 now and buy one again later when you can comfortably afford it. The current snipers are usually pretty heavily refurbished and have giant billboard markings on them so the collector value will never be that high. Don't be afraid to shoot it. I have one from this batch as a shooter and it will do 2" at 200m with surplus which is almost unbelievable to me.

Good to know. Any idea if this is the last of them? I dont know about the distributor but the retailers are just selling the last of them here. Guessing theres about 12 left in Mb.

I don't recall....but what was the price before? We are seeing them 7-800 here.

I'm talking about Russian/Chinese/Bulgarian military surplus of 7.62x54R mm ammo not hunting ammo like .308,.30-06 etc. Military surplus you can only use for punching papers or hitting hard targets. For me, 50 cents per round for just shooting targets is preposterous. By the end of 2017 it would be around 70-80 cents if the trend continuous and IMHO it will. I have 2 Mosins and about 4,000 rounds for them. If they go, I'll put my Mosins on the wall.
Switch to the SKS's.

You're right about the trigger, it is WAY nicer on the PU, and the action is so much smoother and just more of a pleasure to operate. It feels much more like an instrument than a tool.
Do you think if I wait and get the PU down the road I'll be paying a lot more?

The PU sniper I bought at crappy tire was $799 and the 91/30 was just under $200. The SVTs are $475 I think from lever. If It was my choice I would get the SVT and the 91/30 and then save up some money and get the PU in the future. That way you get to enjoy a semi and a bolt action and two guns are always better then one!
Just realized you already have the sniper and the 91/30, in that case sell the 91/30 and buy an SVT

Well If thats the case I do not want to be paying more than I already am for one of these, the 91/30 will be a lot more affordable in the future, if the PU's dry up it might be a long time before I would have enough to pick one back up.
I think I will keep the PU, sell the 91/30, and see what else I can sell I have laying around and get me the SVT-40.

I think I agree with that... I am going to sell the 91/30 and get me an SVT.

Thanks a lot for the replies everyone, I feel like keeping the PU (knowing these are a bit lower grade, perfectly fine to use as a shooter), selling my 91/30, and scraping some extra cash to get the SVT,
will give me the most joy and pride of ownership out of all the other possibilities.
It certainly is addicting! I will still need some Sks's for the cheapest of the Red Army toys. It does suck the price of 7.62x54r has gone up and will probably go up further.
But it is still cheaper than any regular non surplus cartridge, not as cheap as the 7.62x39, but well enough in the realm of affordability still.
Anyone want a Samsung watch and some motorcycle boots!!?? haha I need me some SVT money.
