I have a Rem 700 BDL 7mmRM that I want to change the barrel out, poor blue'ing, some rust.
I have one that should work, very nice cond.
The markings on my barrel are RV 25, 1980 manufactured.
The other 7mm barrel is marked PK 28, what does this tell me ? Is it a fit ?
Thanks,
gypsy

If these are barrels from Remington rifles, the RV would be November 1979.
The PK would be June of 1990.
Are they already chambered in 7 mm RM or are the 7mm bore in another caliber?
I checked my rifles and none have a number on them although they are all newer than the two you quoted.
Best referred to a gunsmith for an opinion.

If they are both Rem 700 barrels then the new one will fit and PROBABLY headspace correctly but the lettering will almost certainly not index correctly. A gunsmith can install the barrel and check the headspace and correct the indexing if you wish. Without the proper tools and gauges this is not a DIY job.

Remington M600/700/78/7/40X barrels, long and short receivers, all have the same nominal shank dimensions. They may or may not interchange with respect to headspace, bolt nose clearance and iron sight indexing if present.
It is necessary to confirm headspace, bolt nose clearance, etc. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes not.
If the barrel is not a drop-in, some machining is necessary.

Thanks folks,
Yes both are 700's BDL 7mm RM, even both from LH actions, if that matters.
RV is my original, so barrel 1979, serial # on action is A... so 1980.
Good to know the replacement barrel is 10-11 years newer.
Gunsmith says he will remove the barrel on Monday, and inspect and determin if it's an easy swap, or if tooling is req'd. He charges $100 for that. Can go upwards of $400 more if threading or reaming is req'd.
If it's an easy swap out, identical threads & headspace, he says it will be a $150 job.

I would not spend $400 for an install on a used barrel. it should be a direct swap and check the head space. if all that work is required buy a new blank.

$100 to pull the old barrel and inspect?
$400 to install a take off?
Does he at least supply the Vaseline?
I would not be leaving my rifle with him.

That's what he said, $100 to pull and inspect & estimate what else is needed.
If no tooling is required, and other barrel is a match, he will install it for $50 more, $150 total.
I'll likely just pay $100 and $150 if all is compatible.
