Loading Port Mod

Does anyone have any tips about loading port mods? I'm about to start on my M3500.

Here's what I want it to resemble. (this one's an M2)

Wear a respirator or atleast a dust mask, especially if ur using a carbide bit. There will be ALOT of metal (aluminum is the worst) particles in the air if u use a power tool.

Does the lifter need any work?
 
Slow and steady. I might take more off to expose the follower but I'm satisfied for now. It cycles with dummy rounds, I'll try shooting it next week. I'd like to fill in the end of the lifter with a weld, maybe I'll see if any of my buddies mig weld.

I'd been looking at doing this for a couple of months now, took that long to work up the confidence.
 
Good start.
You can go a bit more aggressive but its always best to go slow and not take too much off.
Much easier to remove than add back.

The pic below isn't of the done port, but you can see at the front or the port, you want to start funnelling the receiver so shells basically flow into the mag tube. no square or abrupt edges to hang up shells on.
The side with the shell latch, do not cut into the space that holds the cotter pin, that retains the shell latch pin.

You can move your port forward a bit, but you don't want to start removing the lip the retains the follower.
The pic of the M2 in the first post, is a butcher job.
Very little keeping the follower in the mag tube, and over time that will wear out and the receiver will be a paper weight.

Can't imagine I'd do this to mine but interested in your test assessments, whether you find it easier/faster to load with this modification. Thanks for posting your adventure Zee705.

When I first got it, I sliced my thumb open on my first twin load attempt. She's smooth now and it's easier to get my thumb inside the loading port.
 
How close was/is the serial number to the opening?
On the M3500 I looked at there was maybe an 1/8" to remove before obliterating it...
Does the Turkey model put it elsewhere?
 
You'd think that with 3 gun being a "thing" for a while now, shotgun manufacturers would have started opening up their ports and making their lifters more feed friendly a long time ago?

We're starting to see a bit of it now, at least on competition models, but its long overdue.
 
My serial # is in the same spot but I'm still far enough away from it.

It's definitely an extra process (cost) for the manufacturers to open up the port. If you're shelling out around 2 Gs or more for a shotgun, you would kind of expect it to be already done.
 
I am just getting into shotguns but it seems 3 gunners do some series modding of the loading port..as this is a tactical form i would think too much "could" be a bad thing. but some of them sure look clean.

This guy shouldn't Count Roberto Vezzoli 2015 champion as he is sponsored by beretta... if he over chews a receiver he simple call someone for a free replacement.
His is cut pretty deep the port modding start at 2min

I think his lifter cut has merit for the tactical crowd
