Hi CGN

I am fairly new to optics, looking for some advice on what optics to go with

Looking on advice for rings, i read the low might have clearance issues and the medium height is recommended

Price range 400-700

I was looking at this one:

http://www.alflahertys.com/collections/optics/products/vortex-viper-riflescope-6-5-20x50-pa-with-dead-hold-bdc-reticle-vpr-m-06bdc

Any advice or feed back?

Thanks!

Hi

I use a sightron s-tac 3-16 with medium burris signature ring on my tikka t3 varmint. It is a great scope and I would think it is much better then the one you linked for the money.

All depends what you are going to use it for.

For hunting only a 6x like a 6x36 or 6x42 with CDS or M1 turret.

Combination hunting and targets to 1000 yards a fixed 10x with elevation and wind age turrets.

For that magnification and price range I'd recommend the Sightron S-Tac 4-20x50. The glass will be noticibly better then the viper, the crosshairs are finer (the viper crosshairs are quite thick) which will make it easier to be precise and you have all the same features (zero stops, side parallax, etc) as the viper with a larger magnification range.

https://sightronusa.com/index.php/product/s-tac4-20x50moa/ That's the manufacturer site, Hirsch Precision and Mystic precision (he's active on this board) both carry the scopes in canada and Mystic has a review you can read here:

http://mysticprecision.com/2016/04/...and-3-16x42-performancevalue-out-of-the-park/

As for the ring height you'll want the scope mounted as low as possible for optimal positioning, if you can't find info from someone who's mounted the same scope (or one with the same dimensions) on the tikka I would suggest to get the gun and scope first, mock up the scope on the gun to determine how much height above the rail you'll need and then order the rings accordingly.

For reference on my tikka varmint (which has a similar barrel contour to your CTR) I have a 44mm objective lens scope mounted in leupold low QRW rings and there is about 1/8 of an inch between the bell and barrel (which is greater then I would like but it's as low as I can go with a rail (talley one peice rings, for example, would allow a lower mounting).

Remember that these scopes you're considering all have 30mm tubes which will sit higher then a scope with 1" tubes, so if you're reading from someone who's mounted their 50mm scope on a CTR make sure it's a 30mm tube in order to use their recommended ring height.

Btw, Good choice on the gun and good luck getting it all set up.

Thanks for the feedback!

Is there a good guide to what all the numbers, etc mean on scopes? 6.5x-20x50mm vs 5-15X40, etc

Thank you!
