Keltec su 16 tactical a viable option ?

Hey there black rifle shooters. I saw an article recently about the kel tec su 16 tactical in 223 and wondered if this was worth a purchase. I'm sort of in the market for a black rifle in 223 preferably semi auto and most importantly non restricted.

Heard abunch about the ruger mini 14 however I really dislike the look of it. Even the tactical version just looks too much like a hunting rifle and not the appearance of an armalite rifle.
Before coming to the forum I tried looking up reviews of the gun but haven't found many on the tactical version of the gun.

My price point isn't that great so unfortunately the acr and other expensive non restricted are out of the question. $800-1400 I really like the look of the cx4 storm (I know it's 9mm) but uses the same mags as the pistol I use. Many dislike the look of that thing but not me.

So here's the final thought. I love the cx4 storm. But I know little about the keltec and would like to know if this gun is not junk.

I have owned both. The CX4 is an amazing firearm.

The keltec is cheap... but functions.

I would recommend the CX4.


Fun fact: I sold my CX4 a while back and missed it so much I bought another.

The keltec I don't even think about.
 
Hah wow must be great ! Thank you for the feedback friend. I have held the cx4 and instantly loved it. Can't say I've shot it but I know I'll have it within a year ;)

You are comparing apples to oranges here. A 9mm to a .223 has different applications.
As Daver said, the quality of the Beretta is superior and will use your 92 mags but it's still a PCC.
If you want a .223 at that price point, you have the Su-16, the T97 and ARs ( which you specifically don't want). The KelTec is the most AR like in ergonomics.
Maybe save a hair more and look for a used Robarms XCR or even a used Tavor. They are really coming down in price and can be found around the $1750-$2000 range now. IMO, both are superior to the SU-16.

Edit: There is a Benelli MR-1 on the EE right now that is just a hair north of your budget. The good thing is it's .223, non-restricted and it looks like the CXStorm!

I have the SU 16 and have been very happy with it. I swapped out the stock for a Magpul MOE Carbine stock. Have over 1000 rounds through it with no issues. I like that is uses AR Mags as well.
 
Thank you for your post, I agree. Not exactly apples to apples. lol. I do like the look of the Robinson arms and would agree it's superior quality however even 1700-2000 is still Alittle high atm. After my previous purchase I'm struggling and trying to regulate my budget. Lol If I ever saw a Robinson xcr for 1700 it would be a bit of a struggle to fight my desire.

If your budget is absolutely within the $800-$1400 dollar range, I can vouch for the SU 16 Tac personally. Excellent handling firearm, More point able and lighter than even the AR 15s! havent tested the accuracy yet. I certainly agree that longevity is a concern with the SU 16 due to its all plastic receiver. But so far ive had no issues and it is covered by a lifetime warranty for the original owner......

Within your budget you could also hook up a used MR1, but like many will state, "its hardly a tactical minded rifle" ; although thats true, the quality is Italian standards, the trigger is better than most stock ARs and the accuracy is better than anything else Non Restricted for the price point.
 
I've had a couple su16, one tactical and a predator version. 1 1/2 Moa with hand-loads,2 to 3 with AE. Never had any issues .
I've had a couple of keymod XCRs, 1 MOA with hand loads,2 ish with most factory ammo. Again no issues(bit on the heavy side)
Had a Jard48,lightest and most accurate but very unreliable. Maybe they got that fixed though. And it seems to be very cheaply made.
I own none of these now .

I'm currently paying off a MV, if it's accurate,I'll be happy.

Inicredibly lightweight.
That feel alone is enough to throw most people right off as it feels like there is nothing there.
seroiously at what four odd pounds, it is ridiculously light.

The folding stock feature ir quirky but best ignored unless you backpack.

Actually reliable.
A simple and efficient piston system that is actua;lly fairly reliable and easy to disassemble.
A very fast trigger reset too.

Takes AR mags.
Guys buy firearms on that decision alone at times.

Inherent accuracy of the .223 round.
Two to three moa at worst ammo.

Sights are pathetic, especially the rear sight.
A lego brick with a hole drilled into it may have needed more production effort.
However, it is a flat top and optic ready.

It has its' god and bad.
As a utilty tool that you don't care if is neglected in your trunk for months on end, ok.
As a varmienting rifle ,no.
 
I would offer one other option. (since you only prefer semi-auto)

Troy PAR. (Pump-action NR rifle) $1,159.99 plus tx for the optic ready model. (mine is the national)


Like I said I had owned the SU-16 tactical, and while it was light, accurate enough, and ok in almost every way... I hated the lack of modularity, the feel of the materials, etc.
And I really hated the two screws near the mag release button. ( I would index on them accidentally and slow down mag changes)

I prefer bullpups, as they have shorter OAL than other NR rifles.

However, I bought a Troy PAR in .223, and it is a blast to shoot, very high quality, 16" barrel, NR, AR mags, shoots almost as fast, and kind feels like driving stick compared to an automatic transmission.

Looks great, feels great, and man do I love it.

Plus then you can get the CX-4 for your semi auto 10 round fun....

I purchased the su-16 tac 6 months ago approx and so far I'm pleased. I've put exactly 500 rounds through it with no jams or any feeding/ejection problems whatsoever. The majority (400) rounds are Barnaul's steel cased ammo and the rest Fusion and Remington. I noticed a screw on the side side of the mag receiver starting to back out at round 450 or so but besides that no issues. Twice now range officers have approached me regarding the legality of not having this firearm trigger locked in the locked case thinking this was a restricted AR firearm. It's not all that accurate and gets worse after the first mag is put through it but for banging off one or two hundred rounds it's a blast. You won't be stacking shots (or at least I won't be) but for my intents and purposes I have no complaints.
 
Daver , that is a damn cool pump action gun man !!! I gotta look into that. Never seen a nice looking pump rifle. Lol. I definitely gotta check that out man !! You said 16" barrel. Have not shot it out to 100 yards yet. Have used it at 50 yards. Accuracy is quite good at that short range :).

I am a new shooter and this is my first semi-auto. I am sure the gun is far more accurate than I am.

BTW - it's the SU 16 Tactical. I failed to indicate it is the tactical version in my last post.
