1st time reload for 45-70 Marlin 1895GBL

Just acquired a Marlin 1895 GBL in 18 1/2" length. Going to reload myself. Here are the list of stuff I'm going to use for reload. Never done 45-70 before, looking for recommendation for load data. Thank you in advance!

Hornady FTX 325 grain bullets
IMR 4198 powder
Once used Hornady Leverevolution brasses
Lee Precision 45/70 3 Die Steel Set
Planning to use Federal Large Rifle 210 primer (if anything else works better for you, please let me know)

Going to use mainly for whitetail, mulies and wild boars.
 
The temptation will be to load this thing to the max. Recoil climbs to astonishing levels. My Marlin was nicknamed "I've fallen and I can't get up".
If you load it to deer levels and not Rhino levels your shoulder and people standing beside you will grateful.
 
Also just keep in mind you will jot be able to crimp those rounds unless you get a bit creative. The leverevelution brass I assume you are using (once fired) is actually very much shorter than the minimum OAL. Just saying. Plus I have a hard time finding load data for that round for some reason. I just load cast bullets and have fun hurting my shoulder.

Strangely it's very hard to find load data for that combination, once I finish loading and try them on the range, I will post some results later. Thanks!
 
Yes ..................100 yards with a pre- crossbolt safety Marlin 4x Leupold and leadshot filled sandbags off the bench.These aren't max loads either but the recoil with a curved butt plate is stiffer than a .338 win mag.........I do want to diddle around with RCBS cast GC bullets this summer........Harold
 
The 45-70 ftx brass is shorter as said but not by a lot. You may get away with standard dies but the hornady new dimenton dies may be in order or you can grind a bit off the standard ones to make work.

I want to stick with Honady FTX 325 grain bullets, found out their brasses are shorter to accommodate the bullet for OAL. Regular dies can't crimp them. I did a lot of reading online, found out the simplest solution is to get a .45ACP crimp die, and they will reload properly. I was going to buy a box of factory load to shoot then reload right away, but can't even find a single box in any stores in Saskatoon. Bought some once fired hornady brasses here at ee, but have to wait for few more days from shipping. If anyone has more once fired horandy leverevolution brasses want to sell, please let me know.
 
Remember to measure a factory rd for C.O.A.L. before building your own.....maybe a dummy rd or two for testing feeding...Harold

Take a belt sander to the bottom of you seater/crimp die and take a bit off the bottom. Dont let it get too hot by dipping it in water. And presto it will crimp the short brass.
 
I have no problem crimping with standard dies. The LEE factory crimp die however won't work.

I just picked up a set of Hornady dies and the FTX seater. I'll give it a try in the next couple of weeks.

You can also shorten the FCD or buy the Redding 86262.
 
To be honest when crimping these cases I just put the round on top of the shell holder and set up the crimp feature on the die as I normally would. Only difference is the round just needs a little push out of the top of the die to fallout. Simple!
