Can I get some help with 870 setup weights?

I'm looking to setup either a 12.5" 870 or 14" 870 for my wife.

My setup is a 14" Wingmaster and stripped down with a Magpul stock and forend I'm at 6 pounds 9 ounces.

I've read that Dlask barrels are heavier than Remington and the grizzly barrels.

Does anyone have a weight on a Dlask 12.5" or Grizzly 12.5" barrel?

Anyone with a Hogue 12" lop and forend have a weight with a 12.5" or 14" barrel?

I'm thinking a Hogue stock set and a grizzly 12.5" barrel would be lightest.

Any help with weights and setups would be great, trying to go as light as I can in either of those barrel lengths.

I don't have a proper scale, but I'd estimate that my 870 with 12.5" Dlask barrel is at least 7.5 lbs even with the lightweight 12" Hogue stock its wearing.
 
Difference between 12.5 and 14 is an ounce, maybe 2 at most. Remember also, decrease weight is increased recoil. Lightest stock would probably be a Remington synthetic since they are hollow, lightest forend is probably wood (not laminate)

I'll be casting and loading for her shotgun so I can manage recoil to a point with the loads I work up for her.

That's the main reason I want to go 12ga not 20ga as my casting and loading gear is all for the 12ga.
 
Don't have a scale to give you exact weights , however ...

About the lightest configuration 870 would be a 12" LOP Hogue with a 12.5" DA barrel w/bead sight (although I'd add an XS tritium big dot), a solid wood forend (although for the extra tiny bit of weight I'd go with the Hogue forend), and an aluminium mag tube happy cap. < the stock mag cap is surprisingly heavy compared to the happy cap.

That's a good list and is sorta what I was thinking.

I hadn't considered the weight of the mag cap though, thanks.
 
No problem G.Mitchell.

I went through the same type of quest for my wife. Went the 20 gauge DA Grizzly route. Ended up swapping out just about every part you can to improve or lighten it. Turned into an expensive project however ended up perfect for her needs.

One thing of note on the 12 gauge Grizzly with a happy cap:
if you want to run a sling the original heavy cap has the sling mount as you know. On my beater 12 gauge Grizzly I went with the aluminium cap and the addition of the S&J hand-stop sling plate. Haven't weighed of course but the combination seems lighter than the original cap. The addition of the hand-stop might also ease your wife's mind of her hand being close to the muzzle.

When setting up my 12.5 DA shotgun for use by the fairer ### the biggest difference to "shootability" wasn't the weight but shortening the butt stock from standard length of pull to the shorter 12" tactical stock by Hogue.
Allowed the shooters to take proper stance rather than the typical "lean back" to compensate for too much weight forward.

This is why my wife can't shoot any of my shotguns - LOP is just way too long. This thread has got me thinking I might need another shotgun.....gee

Dead on lmar.

When I pulled the 20 ga. Grizzly out of the box I gave her no instruction other than hold it up as if you're going to shoot it... just to she what she'd do.

She immediately tucked the stock under her arm. It was clearly too long for her.

So ... I immediately ordered the Hogue set and it's worked great for her. (was a PITA to make it fit on the 20 ga .... far more difficult than the 12 ga. but that's another story)
 
So with the Hogue 12" lop stock set, Dlask happy cap, and 14" Remington barrel it's 6 pounds 2 ounces. Still waiting on the Norinco 12.5" barrel. The Hogue stock set is nearly a full pound lighter than the Magpul.

Yeah, the MagPul is fairly heavy. One of the two things I don't like about it. Other being there's no sling attachment point on the bottom for a conventional carry. No doubt the 12.5" Grizzly barrel will lighten it up. Not just a couple ounces on the length but it's a bit thinner than the Remington.

Been tossing around the idea of picking up a 12.5" Grizzly barrel as well.

I run my Magpul gear with two different sling setups so I like the side mounts.

For my wife's I want a traditional bottom sling. The Hogue is already setup for that and I'm getting a sling mount that can be mounted down for the front sling point.

I'll get some pictures up once it's all together.
 
Yes, please do. Always like checking out what guys put together for their wives. Usually pick up an idea or two.

Is that scale accurate? That sounds crazy light even given the Hogue stock.
 
That's wild, my 870 even with its Hogue stock and Dlask mag cap seems to be much heavier than my 6.5 lb Ithaca 37, and almost on par with my 8 lb Ithaca 51, could the Dlask barrel really be that heavy?

I wish I had a proper scale.
 
Yeah it's surprising for sure. Not sure if it makes much difference but this is an old Wingmaster with metal trigger group too.

It sure feels light and is nimble in the hands.

If the Grizzly 12.5" barrel is lighter still this should be under 6lbs when it's all setup.
