#5 Enfield Sight Question

Just looking at the rear sight on my #5 and noticed that where the "hinge" pin that goes through the receiver and comes out on the left side of the rifle there is a small grove and looks to be a pin hole for a retaining pin.

I can't seem to find a picture online. Should the hinge pin have a roll pin on the end holding it in or is it just the spring and plunger that holds it in with pressure?

there should a little solid pin ,pointed on one end that taps in the hole in the pin and lies in the groove.

Use a finishing nail and cut to length.

And if you don't put in a pin. it will probably never fall out. As said above, use a nail or anythin you can find that will fit. You will never be able to buy the original.

I put a small finishing nail in mine when I first discovered it was missing as a quick temporary measure. That was over 30 year's ago

I'll see what I can make. I was even thinking of nice roll pin or even some stainless type safety wire I have.

For the finishing nail are you using the pointed end and cutting the top to size or keeping the top and cutting the other end down?

I cut off the point and used the head part. It swaged in beautifully!

I left the head on and just ground a little point. If you leave the head on it won't slide through and fall out.
