Reloading 12ga slugs

Sorry to bring this back from the dead. I don't have any experience or equipment for reloading slugs but I need cheap plinking ammo. Debating on buying a flat of target loads and dumping out the shot and pushing in slug projectiles. Will the consistency be there in bulk birdshot to smash a gong at 50 yards? I'm not expecting tack driving ammo just something cheap to run in my ksg.

Check wax slugs on youtube.

I made some and was astonished at how accurate they were.

I bought the cheapest #8 target loads I could find, and made the waxers using paraffin my wife uses for canning.

I tried to private message you but your inbox is full.

I was told you have experience with Norc 1911 sights. I bought a NP-29 matt chrome and the sights are also matte crome with white inserts. I would like to replace them with plain black novak style sights but I'm unsure which ones to buy. Do you have any suggestions ?

I've seen wax slugs the only thing that concerns me is I've seen some horror stories online of over pressure and barrels splitting

Yes, there is nothing Buba can't screw up.

I bought the tool that cuts the crimp off the case on the inside of the roll on the edge. That way the wad is still captured and has the correct pre-load compression. The hot lead and molten was is poured in with a teaspoon and cannot pop out because of the roll on the lip of the case.

Some guys make them by cutting the crimp off by cutting the top off the shell, cutting from the side of the case. This removes the roll on the edge and the slug can them migrate.

If you shoot these single shot, not much can go wrong. If a shot does not sound right, check the barrel to make sure the slug is not in the barrel.

I used the Challenger extra light target loads, with 7/8 oz #8 shot. These wax slugs come out at around 1100 fps and are pleasant to shoot and do a 2" group at 25 yards, from a smoothbore with a single bead. I found they load in the magazine of a pump and work fine.

At 25 cents each, these are cheap shooting slugs.

Wow thanks for the info! Puts my mind at ease. I'm gonna look into making a batch of these

The rear sight is a standard Colt dovetail. Buy a Colt rear sight. The front dovetail is non standard. It is quite narrow. Buy whatever front sight you want and have gunsmith cute dovetail wider, to give you a standard size or have him mill the new front sight base narrower, to fit the Norc. Given the chrome and how tough the Norc steel is, he might prefer making the new sight narrower.

Wax slugs. I am not an expert. I made them once. They all shot and were plenty accurate for plinking.

I did not try any in a rifled choke. Next time.

Here is a picture of one of them. It differs from an ordinary wax slug in that I dropped a 44 cal round ball on top. This did not cause the wax to break up before the target.

Note that I cut the crimp off on the inside of the hull, leaving the folded over edge. This keeps the wad captive.

I was pleased with the results, so the next session will make 100 slugs.

I used canning paraffin, not candles or crayons. I heated it on the stove, at low heat. The shot and wax is heated in the same container. I used a small foil pie plate intended for small meat pies. Dollarama.

I tried to get mostly shot in the teaspoon. The wax cools to be quite hard and holds the shot together.
