308win bullet weight opinions.

Hi all I have a boat load of 308cal projectiles and 4lbs of Varget.
I'm ready to start experimenting with a load for my 308win.

This will be a hunting load, for everything one can hunt in Alberta. Mice to moose!
Maximum distance I will shoot at animals will be 300 yards.
But likely be within 100 90% of the time (I'm sneaky).

In your opinion would you shoot 165gr or 150gr bullets and why?
I have the following on hand:
150gr interlock
150gr SST

165Gr interlock
165gr SST

180gr Sierra G

Of those you listed I would go 165gr Interlock. I have used Interlocks and SST I find the SST too soft and frangible unless the velocities are kept low. Interlocks work well for a 'classic' cup and core bullet IME. In the 1990's I loaded 165gr Interlocks in my .30-06 with quite a mild load and shot many animals on the game reserve I was working on in South Africa. I have also used .308 165gr Sierra game Kings and they worked quite well too, I also prefer to keep them at milder velocities but in a 180gr they would be very effective.

In my .308 I load 150gr TTSX and that where I am staying for a hunting load. On the range I use either 150gr Interlocks or 150gr Speer, whatever I can find cheaper!
 
My way of thinking is quite simple. . Load them all; you have the powder and you have the bullets. Visit the shooting range as you go along, work your loads up and find your accuracy loads. . You can never have enough assortment of ammunition.
 
I would shoot them all and see which was best. that said I use 150 swifts in my tikka battue because its fast, bonded and shoots excellent. in the 308 I tend to stick with the 150 to 165 grn. the hornady intelocks you have would work well. I have found the lighter sst's to be a little soft.
 
I echo the SSTs being a bit frangible. I use them in '06 and have in 308 for the range. I would try 165 interlocks, or a mono metal in 150. I use GMX; TTSX seem the perform the same.
 
Out of your choices, the 165 Interlock. I did a lot of culling with that bullet, though with a 30-06. Same thing a few yards farther out.

The SST is a bit soft, which makes perfect sense as by the time a boat tail is an advantage a harder bullet is a disadvantage.
 
Op, you don't tell us what kind of hunting you do or what your rifle setup is....

I use my 308 as a dogging rifle and shots are under 150 yards at most..... my point user scout prints cloverleafs at 100 if I do my part..... but I wouldn't be using 180's if I was trying to stretch it out....

It's all relative..

Thanks for this, I think I'm going to start with 165 interlocks.

I think I'll do that after all.
But will start with the interlock 165gr first as a general hunting load.

Would you mind sharing some info on your TTSX load? I'm going to start loading up soon and am hoping the 150gr was the right choice over the 130gr.
