Interesting rifle i spotted.

I came across a rifle a friend of the family owns that is pretty cool.

Its a nearly mint condition savage 99c in .308. Id wager its one of the later production models. Seems our friend is looking to sell it.

I always did fancy a lever gun, but i'm having a hard time coming up with a fair offer for it. I cant seem to find any for sale online.

What do you guys figure one of these should go for?
 
Found some complaints about accuracy on these, Think ill ask to take it for a test drive before i make an offer. It was good enough for the old guy to bag a moose or two with tho.
 
Many of the fans of Savage 99's pooh-pooh the C models; apparently the older internal rotary magazine rifles, with their quaint little round-counters and their propensity for filling up with rainwater like little canteens are the only way to go. They also don't like Monte Carlo combs...too comfortable, I suspect. The tang safety is too convenient, so it's anathema as well.

But a detachable mag can be useful, and is all the rage in other types of rifles nowadays...so why not on a 99? A tang safety is wonderful in a Ruger77 or a double-barrel shotgun...and guess what, it's just as nice on a 99. And if you are using a scope, a Monte Carlo is comfortable and efficient...even on a 99.

I suspect that this gun would bring 600 bucks quite easily on the EE, especially if you take some good pictures. You've just gotta find one of those tasteless heathens to buy it, rather than a purist/collector. But don't worry, there are plenty of us around! :)
 
About 2 months ago there were 7 (yes, I counted them) 7 savage 99s at the local gun shop. Different models from 270 to 303 savage to 308 and even a 303 british. Needless to say, the 270 sold on the low end for $425 and the minty 303 british sold for top dollars at $600. The two 308s went pretty fast also. Keep in mind, these are retail prices.

First time I heard of them in .270, thought they were were just shorter calibers

Funny you would mention that. I had a 99c many moons ago, and could never get any accuracy out of it, no matter what I fed it, factory or handload. Best I ever got, IIRC, was around 4" at 100 yards off the bench. It was OK for what I needed - a short to moderate range moose and bear gun, but I was never happy with it. Too bad, too, because it is/was one of the nicest guns out there, in terms of fast loading, light weight, rapid fire.

I'm going to guess that the '270' was actually a 250 Savage and the '303 British' was a 303 Savage. I am not aware of any 99's ever being factory built in 270 Win or 303 Brit.
 
I have a 99a in 250-3000 and a 99c in 308 paid $400 a piece for them but that was a few years ago when every gun was cheaper. Maybe I will have to take the 308 out and try to shoot groups
 
400 is fair. Just a few years ago a 99c in good shape was only about 300 and lots around for that. Guys are now asking up to 600 but I don't see lots getting it. Not a bad gun and ok accuracy for hunting.
 
I have what I believe is sort of rare a model 99M in 250-3000 and I just finished doing some load development this week end where I shot a 4 round group of .75" which I was very happy with so some are quite accurate
