Picked up a mossberg mvp .223 rifle. 24 inch barrel, 1:9 twist, unsure of how heavy a bullet i can go. New to reloading will be my first shot at it. Any info greatly appreciated.

My MPV shoots really well with Hornady 75gr and 23gr of H4895. 50 and 55gr bullets also do well but the windrift of 75gr is a third of the lighter bullets when you get out to 300+ yards.

My 24" MVP loves Hornady 75gr BTHP with 24.6gr of Varget and a CCI BR4 loaded to 2.250", avg velocity 2749fps and 7fps std dev. 1/2" groups all day! I also had good luck with 68's and 55's, it shoots a wide range of bullets very well.

I still can't believe how accurate this rifle is, anyone who hates on Mossberg has never shot an MVP.

Typically a 1-9" twist is only good up to about 69grs, however with the longer 24" barrel and extra velocity it easily stabilizes 75gr bullets.

I've had no real issues from 55gr to 75gr. I was out with a bud a few days ago sighting in the scope at 60m and did three 3 shot clovers before locking in the turrets. Was supposed to rain but ended up being a perfect day until we left around 2pm, then the rain came.

On a side note I'd remove the scope mount screws and reset them with loctite. A few weeks back I had the kids out shooting .22LR and brought the MVP for a fun step up. By the end of the day all four screws for the mounts had come loose! When I got home I found NO loctite on the threads. I've used this rifle since new for 2 years now and never had an issue. The day out with the kids it was about -20 so I'm guessing time and the cold worked things loose this time out. I only noticed because once the scope is set it never misses and the kids kept missing the target, a coconut, by 1/2" repeatedly. After I did as well I started to check for wobble and found the issue.

One other thing I've found is that the China surplus 5.56 from 1995 seems to have harder primers that the MVP doesn't like so much. About 2 out of a box of 20 fail to fire even after trying 3x. If I put the same rounds in the MR1 they work just fine. Not a big deal but worth noting.

A 1-9 24" will shoot up to the 80 Sierra match, so long as you get the velocity up. For long range, this bullet is very good. I have shot it back to 1000 yards.

For easy loading and accuracy, buy match bullets from 68 gr to 77 gr.

The lighter bullets will group at short range, but the wind will move them a lot.
