Wonder if anyone also had any problems, the butt stock of the stock seems to be a 1/4 wider than it should be, this picture is of a Springfield rubber butt pad and you can see how much wider the butt stock is, the metal Norinco butt pad will not fit either. Has anyone had this problem or is their a special butt pad made just for the wooden stocks

You inherit it or purchase it? Boyds offers all manner of M1A profile stocks. From real fat laminated ones (hungry likes those ones:rolleyes:) to something close to USGI walnut profile.

I ordered it, and received it today, the only selections they offered was M14 USGI and Springfield M1A, it was mentioned on here that the Springfield M1A was the wood replacement for the Norinco plastic stock

Have to think about this now? Maybe it wasn't Boyds that I ordered my laminate from. In any event whom ever it was had a big selection to choose from. Problem was keeping the price less that $100. One had to watch for sales and jump on them.

Who else sells new M14/M1A stocks?

I have two Boyd's both Laminate everything was a true drop in including the butt pads (medal) only thing I had to do was clean out the holes for the stock liner screws. At one time they offered an over sized stock but haven't seen it on offer for quite a few years.
I suggest you email that picture to Boyd's and ask them.

I did, but was unsure if the butt pads were larger on the wood stocks, so I thought I would ask here

The Boyd stocks are a little wider in the butt than necessary (I believe the term is "proud"). You need to sand them down to size (if you want to)

Ya guys, I've heard that the Boyd's M1 Garand replacements stocks all look quite nice, but that they're all slightly oversized. That's why I'm looking for an original.

^^^... I have a Boyds unfinished stock and I just Took off a G.I. butt P and tried on a Chinese butt P and it didn't fit at all. Just like the one in your picture. My suggestion is get Gi butt P before you modify the wood. And my stock is proud also. I guess you can modify it to your liking or leave it.

Thank you so much, I did not know there was a difference between the Chinese and USGI butt pad, that will explain the fit problem. I just ordered one

Curious to know the outcome. Think I have the same stock that has been waiting on a project that hasn't started.

Chinese and American butt plates are the same in dimensions. Just the casting and finish are different.

There must be a little difference between the two, I bought a USGI butt plate and it fit right on, my Norinco you could get it on with a fight, and did not fit as nice as the USGI butt plate. I ended up putting on a John Masen butt plate

I have had a few boyds m1a stocks and all of them had to be fit I hated the "proud" wood, they use to offer an unfinished one which was identical other than the linseed oil but i have also fitted than penciled around and sanded all of mine to be flush and than re applied linseed oil and they always turn out beautiful but on that note I have a springfield at home with a wood stock and its a bit proud around the but plate as well and will require some slimming I guess its all what you prefer but at the very least you will need to fit the but plate into the grooves which may just take a few careful taps? not sure from the pics how much the lips sit over the stock?
