762x39 to 303 british MEXICAN MATCH AMMO

I know you are going to be reloading empty brass.
The round you broke down for this test was loaded with a .250" diameter corrosive Berdan primer.

Wait a second. Does 762x39 bullet fit mosin case? I got some 762x54r cases and 39 bullets.
Thanks for the info!

OP you might find x54r the better donor, unless your express purpose was to make low recoil ammo.

The x54r powder will be more suitable, but DO NOT USE IT ALL. you need to download it some. But you can make 150gr full velocity ammo this way.

Also, x39 bullets are usually .310, whereas x54r is usually .311. I know it's a tiny difference, but that tiny difference can make the difference especially in enfields where bore diameter can vary up to .314 or more.

Its not as cheap as the x39 remade ammo, but it's closer to the real deal while still being comparatively cheap.

Has anyone chrono'd the 303 made with x39 components? Kinda wondering if this would make a suitable deer round for a small person (obviously need something not-fmj). The 7.62x39 isn't too far off a 30-30, and i know people have used it successfully, Im wondering if the large 303 case causes a drop in performance?

I just reread the OP, and he claims about 2120fps, which is like 250fps slower than normal? Is that correct?

the 762x54 is IDEAL for 303 reloading. heavier bullet. 1 choice.
If you want cheap low recoil- use 762x39.
Now just watch all the re loaders get busy this weekend !! LOL
Ive got 3000 rnds of 39 waiting to be repurposed.

This isn't a new idea. (Not ragging on you though, don't take it that way) I first heard about it around here almost 3 years ago when we had that bad ammo shortage and nobody was making .311 bullets.

One guy said "my gun store is sneaky. They hide the 311 bullets in 7.62x54r." At first, i thought he meant the store was actually hiding the bullets behind the x54r on the shelf or something. Eventually it clicked. Lol

my buddy was getting 2120 fps. He also said he was hitting higher at 200 yards with the 39 ammo, over the store bought.

Hmmm. Store bought must have been some round nose bullets with terrible BCs. But yeah, factory 174/180gr ammo is only a bit faster (2460fps ish) than the x39 you're making with the 123gr bullet.

a lot lighter bullet with" very fast" burning powder gives it speed. 762 x54 is slow burning, 762x39 is almost if not as hot as pistol powder.
762x39 from an sks is 2460fps so it actually slows down 340fps once converted.

Was that tested over a chrono, or did that info come off a box of ammo? Because it appears different manufacturers load the x39 to differing velocities.

Now, i understand a lighter bullet with faster powder can potentially reach the same velocities as a heavier bullet being pushed by a larger quantity of slower powder, but i think you misunderstood me.

If the x39 and regular 303 are shooting to similar points of aim at 100, but the x39 is high at 200 then the BC on the 303 ammo must be lower than the x39 bullet. Heavier bullets tend to conserve velocity better (if they are of similar shape) so that leads me to believe the ammo used was a round nose.

Federal blue box 180gr has horrible BCs. The 180gr winchester is much better in that respect.
