The Great Survival Rifle / Pack Rifle Experiment of 2016/17

Those rifles sure did look cold in the first function video, I was getting cold on my couch.
On the accuracy test with scopes, are you going to use targets that are bought or your hand drawn ones? (Nice silouttes by the way.)
I can hear people saying if your circle was "rounder" that shot would have been in scenario.
Looking forward to more updates.
 
I don't think the 10/22 or Papoose use stainless steel for the receivers. Regular 10/22s and Marlin rimfire semi-autos sound like they have aluminum receivers, so that is likely just a different finish. The Papoose magazine is also nickel-plated and not stainless.

Thanks for the testing. I have tagged this post. I own 3 of the 4 exact rifles. The only one that I don't have is the 10/22 takedown. I hope that it doesn't win as I will have to buy one of those as well.

I never bought a 10/22 take down because of stories I've heard about accuracy after take down/ reassembling them. Hopefully your review/testing dispels that.

i have reams of normal targets, i use those big pieces of paper when sighting guns in so i can see if they are WAY off and can dial them in, i just got lazy that day and decided to keep using the big paper, but yes i will definitely be using normal targets once i get out with scopes on the guns.

for fun i was going to make one of the guns targets bigger just to see if anyone noticed.
at the end of the day i used the OnTarget measuring program so the distances are exact even if the dots are not.

and yes i get cold too when i go back and watch that video.

i have been heading that a lot of them as well so im going to spend a lot of time testing that part out.
i wonder if that is why a lot of the after market replacement barrels for the 10/22 take down have the scope rail mounted directly on the barrel so that will always stay the same?
of they go with the scout set up and put the optic forward so its on the front section permanently.

im not gonna like to you, shooting all 4 of these side by side over this last month i prefer the feel of the Ruger by far to the others.
i think of lot of it has to do with the Papoose and the AR7 not having anything to grab onto under the barrel.

Yeah, I was surprised by the dismal performance of the Papoose, as I've found mine to be surprisingly accurate compared to my 10/22. Have to see if it redeems itself in the optics testing!
 
keep in mind i found the barrel nut of the Papoose loose after the test was done.
im thinking that probably played a part in its poor showing.
(at least im hoping it did!)
which was strange because i cranked that sucker on with the wrench.

Some days, you just happen to end up with the lemon. How hard was it to unscrew by hand after you cranked that sucker on?
 
Nice test. I've owned 2 of the 4 and shot several little badgers. I haven't yet owned a papoose yet. Everyone I have seen in person had canted sights.

I've found now that when I reach for a pack rifle I bring my sxs 45/70 instead of a 22lr. For years I got by with having a 22 but for me personally my double rifle breaks down easy. Never fails and has the power to put down large animals if need be. The downside is ammo is heavier and takes more room but it's a small price to pay. Loaded with cast bullets its as effective on grouse and bunnies as it is for bear and deer. I haven't shot a deer with it but I'm more than confident the results would be positive.
I'm now leaning towards a Jrc takedown. It would have been awesome to have one tested the same as your rimfires
 
Just for reference I have a suzuki 400 eiger that has driven over my Henry survival rifle front and back tire with my 160 lb ass riding it. It didn't look like a rifle in low light. It survived with only a minor scratch on the barrel and some scuffing on the stock. It did not crack.
However it doesn't float for long. It is extremely accurate though but the front sight is easily moved
 
i think when i go on days off starting tomorrow im kinda hankering to go drop my AR7 in a tub full of water to see how long it will stay afloat.
id drop the others in but they are just anchors.

should we start a online poll to see who can guess the closest as to how long the AR7 will stay afloat????

i guess either it will sink right off the bat due to no seal or stay afloat for a while with a small leak or float forever with no leak.
having played with this gun for the last month i find it hard to believe that rear butt pad seals 100% so im gonna guess it will slow leak.

my guess is 10 minutes of float time before its at the bottom of the tub.
