Winchester 555~$45 at Cabela's. Going rate?

I was in Cabela's (Barrie) on the weekend, mostly for fishing stuff...but thought I might see if they had Winchester 333 in stock. My BRNO 2E likes them, and they're cheap. Bought 333 at Bass Pro some time ago and finished them off. Anyhow, I was a little surprised to see 555 for $45...but then, I don't buy Winchester ammo with any frequency. Struck me as a bit high, and more Winchester than I wanted to commit to so I took a pass. When ammo nears the $5+/- for 50, I'm on the prowl for CCI SV or Blazer. Lots of Eley ammo options (which was surprising) but since I'm not really a paper-puncher with my 22s, I took a pass on that.

That price for the 555 inline with what you guys are seeing, or a bit inflated?

Side note~the store was too busy to window shop (=fondle :) ) any new guns, but it's the first time I'd seen a Mossberg Blaze, Savage A17 Heavy barrel/laminate, etc. Decent selection of stuff for sure.
 
In the mid 70's minimum wage was $2.05 per hour. 22shorts were .69,longs .79,LR .89 and lrhp were .99 or 1.09 per 50
Today minimum wage is approx $11.00 , LR is $4.50 to $5.50 per box.

Ammo manufacturers are no longer offering 22 Rimfire ammo as loss leaders.

So there are 2 choices buy some ammo at Today's prices , or don't shoot.

I'll continue shooting, it's cheaper then smoking or drinking,....... YMMV

Yea, well with the canadian dollar in the tank and this ammo mostly being made elsewhere sure doesn't help. I just loaded up on .22 ammo, paying around $12 for 100 rounds at the local store, and about $40 for the boxes (picked up a box of federal cheap 38 grain plinking ammo for $39 yesterday). I do the math and it's still the cheapest way to have fun at today's prices. If/ when the canadian dollar recovers we'll see better deals again I'm sure.

^I get it, I shoot allot of 22, some 17M2, reload & shoot .223, lots of clays 20ga and 12ga~it's a pay-to-play sport, been doing it for nearlly 35 years. lol I also know our dollar isn't strong AND I'm OK with spending $ on decent ammo. Just always considered the bulk-pack Winchester to be near the bottom of the heap, so not ready to spend CCI $ on Winchester "quality". However, I guess the thrust of the question (since I never buy the stuff) was whether or not that was a high price, or, just my impression that it was.
 
Cheapest ammo I've seen is Thunderbolt at SAIL for $39/500, fractions of a cent per round less than the Winny. 15 odd years ago Thunderbolt could be had for $9 USD/ brick 500. Just like gas, once they get us used to the price increase, if/when the dollar goes up in value, the ammo price will not drop, they will just enjoy increased profits ;)
 
45 bucks for Win. 555s is pretty much the going price these days when not on sale . Walmart had Rem. boxes of 525 for close to 80 dollars today . Needless to say that it is not exactly flying off the shelves at that price. I see where Walmart's Winchester 300 Win. Mag. ammo has jumped to 40 dollar for 20 from about 28 bucks a few months ago .

That is about the price I see for 555 packs. 5 years ago it was under $20. I shoot a lot of it in my cz452's and they love the stuff. Buy when you see either 222, 235, 333, 555 and any other count boxes are on sale. It is all the same stuff.
 
The best deal I see is on the Win 333 packs, I get them my local Walmart for 21.97 (just over .06 a pop) as much as I hate setting foot in the place. 45 for 555 seems to be near the going rate now.
 
When looking for the cheapest bulk .22LR I could find to break in my Sig Sauer 1911 a while back, I saw someone post on the forums that 333 Winchester is the cheapest out of all of their bulk boxes and in the few months I've been watching sales that seems to be true. On sale I was able to get it for $19.99 a box. One thing I've noticed people tend to overlook is that Canadian Tire price matches and adds 10% in CT money. If you're lucky enough to have one nearby that stocks ammo, you can luck out when matching sale prices from other stores. That's how I ended up with most of my mini mags.
 
I got a Bucket O Bullets for 89.99 +tax at Bass Pro Shop in Dieppe NB. Works out to .07 cents a bullet and the bonus is they work great in my GSG 1911 .22.

Hey HTH~yep, I was aware it's all the same ammo. I had the same box of 333 for more than a few years, never had a gun that like them worth a damn until I got my 452. Not stellar, but pretty decent to be honest. Then my BRNO proved to like them as well, so finally...a bulk-pack ammo I didn't mind buying. Provided nobody was looking. :) I don't do allot of "plinking" anyway so buying 555 rounds may/may not have been a temptation even if the price seemed fair, so I passed.

As for Canadian Tire~don't get me started. lol They just built a brand, spanking new one (big too) about 1km from my house, and the ammo case is as dull, dusty and poorly stocked as it was in the old store. Always been the case in all the local stores here. Never really bothered me much until I attended a wedding in Belleville a couple of years back, and got out east a little early. Decided to stop into the Canadian Tire store and I was both amazed, and ticked-off at the same time. Just a great selection of guns...a VERY impressive selection of ammunition, and a huge chunk of real estate dedicated TO ammo. I did a little pre-wedding shopping!
