I found a old gun in my granpa's shed when we were dividing the estate. I have done some searching and have identified it as amosin nagant sniper rifle. It is in shootable condition now but the wood is beyond repair. I found some aftermarket syn. stocks for a reasonable price and then I got to thinking about getting a different barrel and turning it into a real hand cannon. What is compatable with the 7.62x54R?

"...What is compatable(sic)..." As in comparable?
A Moisin Nagant sniper version is worth a fair chunk of money these days. Do anything to it and you'll drop its value in half.

It has cyrillic lettering in a 7 digit number on the left of the chamber, and an "arrow" stamped into the butt pad. The bolt doesn't match and the wood is rotten. I wasn't suggesting that there is anything wrong with the 7.62x54, I figured if it was going to get a new stock I might make a little "project" out of it.

As someone who just got beat out of getting one by a half hour, I can honestly say if you don't want to shoot it as is sell it before you do some real damage. One sold at epps in exactly twenty minutes. Compare it to the sniper pics at mosinnagant.net & see if it actually is a sniper. If it is please don't change anything, even if its in rough shape. In addition most gunsmiths won't touch the thing, something about the barrel being impossible to get off half the time.

Might be an ex-sniper. Are the mount holes still there? Is the bolt bent? If they are & you want to sell or trade drop me a pm, rifle with character interest me more than mint ones.

I will post some pics when the kid gets home with the digital. The bolt is bent and you can see where the mount was attached. I have also found the same "arrow" stamped on the barrel band. I don't want to destroy a piece of history but I want to shoot it. I think I will hold off for a while and find out "exactly" what i have here. Thanks for all the input.

side mount, 4 holes in the left side of the reciever ???

about 3/16" threaded ??
