I'd really like an NP29, probably the next gun I buy. However, I'm interested in whether it will take Colt / 1911 9mm mags, which have the same external dimensions as the .45ACP mags.

So, can anyone tell me if the NP29 frame will take .45 mags?

Fit just perfect on my NP29, just tested it with a Fusion .45 8 round magazine, Factory Norinco .45 magazine & Chip McCormick .45 Power-10's.

FYI: best magazine I've found for NP29 are the brownell's brand (obviously sold at brownell's), 55$ US for a pack of 3, 10 rounds mags.

I bought 2 packs (6 total) of brownells 9mm 10rd mags. None of them drop free in my NP29. Did you have to do any modification to yours to run in np29?

Nope. Bought 1 single mag and 1 pack of 3. All 4 drop free. They slide much better than the norincos that came with the gun. The blueing on the norincos is all scratchy on one side. Plus they contain 10 rounds instead of 9. Personnally I don't have any downside to the brownells compared to the factory norincos. I'll trade ya if you want.

I just bought more norinco mags from canadaammo work flawlessly. Would like 10 rds but not doing any competition with it or anything so its fine for me plugging holes in paper!!

I have found 1 of the 5 mags I own, does not drop free too easily, little shake or pull and comes out but the others will drop to the ground not get caught half way

I bought some Wilson combat and some mec gar 1911 9mm mags , , wilsons run perfect , all 3 mec gars needed a little touch up with a file on the follower, now run great too.
The norinco mags that came with it worked great with no problems but are only 9 rnd
all drop free

Can I ask why put 45 cal mags in a 9mm ????
Because 9mm mags are the same dimensions so if the 45 fit so should 9mm. I'm guessing the OP was worried that only the norinco mags that come with the gun would fit

Partly, yes. Sort of like the "double stack" 'Rincos.

The other reason is that I am playing with the idea of converting the NP29 to .38 Super
