I've never owned or even shot one before. Tomorrow I'm buying a rifle that has one installed and I don't know how to feel about it. It will be a hunting rifle mostly but I like to shoot all my guns often so it will get some bench time especially during load developing. It's a m77 in 300 win Mag. Does anyone shoot with the break on then remove it for hunting? I'm not sure of the brand of brake but it looks to be well done and a quality piece.

Brakes are nice for reducing recoil if they are well designed, but they're loud as hell and kind of drive me nuts after a while.

DO NOT fire even ONE shot with a braked rifle, without hearing protection. As to doing load development with a brake and hunting without the brake, removing the brake may not only change the point of impact. but since it changes the barrel harmonics, the most accurate load with a brake , may not be as accurate without the brake.

I absolutely abhor muzzle brakes. If I cannot handle the recoil, then I will step down a notch in power.
They are noisy to the extreme, and as Stubble says, they can have a detrimental effect on accuracy when
a load is developed with one on the rifle, and then it is removed to hunt with. D.

I bought a rifle with a break and sighted it in for deer hunting (not thinking about it) Anyway I shot my deer and my ears where ringing for a week. needless to say the break came off soon as I got home and it was traded off.

Do not shoot even one shot with the brake installed without hearing protection! I have permanent debilitating hearing and balance damage from abusing my ears with loud noises. You don't realize your mistake until its too late. I prefer recoil to the obnoxious noise that brakes produce.
Oh, and don't shoot without hearing protection even with the brake removed while hunting. I hunt with electronic muffs or hearing-aid style plugs. They cost a few hundred bucks and are worth the investment.

If you want a muzzle brake, you should do a Cali style lift on your truck with white sunglasses to match the d-bag American style. Or just step down to a rifle you can handle properly, being accurate with proper shooting skills is more important than shooting too big of a rifle. I would like a brake on a 338 lapua or larger. A 300 win doesn't need a brake, if it was a gun I had to have, then I would have the brake removed. If you can test fire the gun without the brake then you will know if it's too much gun to buy for now or make the deal and loose the brake.

I'm sure I can handle the recoil without the brake. I'm buying it because it's a good deal on I rifle I don't have. I'm thinking I will shoot it with and without a brake and just see how it is.

What everyone else said. Hate them, will never own a firearm with a brake.

The worst for me are the guys shooting next to me at the range with a braked rifle. As soon as one shows up, I ask if they plan on shooting with the brake on. If yes, I pack up and leave.

that's what I THOUGHT until I fired my bar 338 with 275 grain semi- spitzers- even with a past pad, and a kdf brake, it still kicks like a mule- i wouldn't be without one

I have a 338 Win. Mag. Ruger Hawkeye rifle with a factory brake (pre-owned - didn't get the factory compensator or thread protector in the deal) and would rather fire it without it because it's a lot louder with it attached. I don't think I need it because I don't find the recoil objectionable without it. However, some might shoot better with it attached in which case it's a good thing to have.

I tried a short barelled AR with a muzzle brake. The sound wasn't too bad with plenty of ear protection but the shockwave was like getting whacked across the forehead with a sandbag. Really uncomfortable.

Love brakes on my rifles. Wear hearing protection even when hunting. Shot my moose this year with a braked rifle and electronic hearing protection. It's delicious.

All my rifles have brakes, I love how it annoys the fudds at the range :) :ar15:

It's not that it annoys anyone, it's that your selfish decision makes the event painful and unenjoyable for others.

It shall be noted, I detest muzzle brakes.
Can't shoot it, get a smaller gun.

And at some ranges interfering with other shooters, as in your brake blowing around the items on neighboring benches, or exposing other shooters to the concussive blast as they are shooting, will result in you no longer being a member.:p

As a member of the executive, I have had to explain this to a few members at my previous range, and their consideration for the other shooters increased dramatically.:)

And the sample principle applies to the people that consider bouncing ejected cartridge cases off of the other shooters or their gear to be entertaining..
