Well, not exactly loose, but it doesn't take much effort to pull it off. Can be a little troublesome in the field at times.

Mechanism per this image.

For the life of me I can't visualize how this latch works and that being said I have no idea what to tweak.

Anyone out there deal with this situation in the past?

Thanks,

M

It is an S shaped spring. Hooks into the lug on the bottom of the barrel, and is compressed as the forend pivots into place. Maybe its taken a bit of a set.

Any suggestions as to how to compensate for that? Stretch the spring out some how, add a thin shim to the end?

I would be leary about stretching or flattening the S curve to lengthen it. If it snaps, you've got a problem. You might be able to make a little U shaped shim to go over the end, lengthen it slightly.

A U shaped shim made out of thin sheet brass helped alright. Kind of finicky to install though. Looking at the latch frame now, there is a tab that sits on a shelf on the bbl that probably gives the hinge some space to move without binding. Shimming that tab out a bit would move the whole forend forward perhaps accomplishing the same thing?

Thoughts?

M

No harm in trying it.

Nope, scrap that idea. That tab is no where near long enough to rest on the bbl shelf. Must just be some sort of guide.

I pulled the latch frame. Looks like others have attempted to solve this as well. A second set of screw holes in the forend were attempted at some point in time. They are way out to lunch position wise. Also, looks like some wood was relieved under the front screw location, dropping the latch frame too far into the forend. There is a ledge in forend wood that looks suspiciously like where the latch fame should be sitting. I'm thinking I may have to bed the forend and preposition the screws to bring the latch frame forward onto that ledge.

Frustrating. I wish I knew what this was supposed to look like in the first place.

you mention it is old ,may be wood shrunk so possibly add a shim under mech to raise it up towards the barrel fully engage the notch

I bedded the forend where the wood had been relieved in an attempt to do just that. Things got worse. The mechanism would latch up weakly prior to the forend being snug to the bbl. I tried shimming it more. No Joy. I relieved it a bit. No Joy. I took the S spring out and gave it a gentle squeeze in the vice to see if it would straighten out a bit. To my surprise it was very soft and malleable, not spring like at all. That didn't help either. I mounted the latch frame without the forend on the gun to see if I could figure out how it should work in the first place. No Joy. Finally the S spring broke in the most peculiar place. After examining many web images of that S spring I have concluded the one I have/had is badly misshapen either due to age or abuse or both.

So, now I'm on the hunt for a replacement. Should have left the bloody thing alone in the first place @!$@#$@!$#

No you aren't screwed just yet. I think you did the right thing, but unfortunately sh!t happens. You will find he part you need and it will be fixed properly.

Try western gunparts in Edmonton.

After that try numrich, I see they have a bunch of new reproduction parts. For about $20 you would replace the whole latch assembly.

Numrich charges a $40US flat fee for processing international orders. So $20 part + $40 handling + $20 shipping comes to $80US

Also Numrich, currently has a CDN embargo going "Due to heavy seasonal volume international shipments will be suspended until early 2017."
Don't know what early means. It's March already.

Those I found on EBay don't ship to CA.

Contacted what few US sources I could find and they don't ship outside the US.

Have contacted WGP. Waiting for a response.

May end up sifting through parts bins at the next GS?

M

Yeah or watch the EE. A stripped model 24 just sold a few days or a week ago.

I would phone WGP, and ask to speak to Erv and nobody else.

Got this response from WGP.

We do stock them but do have a min. 30.00 order plus s/h and taxes
to ship out. Your local gunsmith likely deals with us and can add to
their parts order to save costs?
Thanks

Any one in AB sending an order in that I can tag onto?
