The Great Survival Rifle / Pack Rifle Experiment of 2016/17

couple years back i was out shooting my AR at -30'ish and it froze mid mag, froze up solid.
that surprised the heck out of me!

did some research at the time and tested a few flavors of oil and gun cleaners and settled on G96.
ive had my guns out at -50 to test them and have yet to have them freeze up since using G96.

im a very strong supporter of using G96..... that and i love the way it smells.
why havnt they come out with a mens aftershave yet?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I think I need to try out this G96. Sounds like great stuff.

i had meant to put this in somewhere, when i picked up my Ruger Take Down on sale my co-worker and old partner picked one up as well.
he has had it out on the Trapline a few times now and he LOVES IT!

Oh, I mean before firing. As in, assemble the gun, and immediately try to disassemble it to see if it just doesn't screw tightly together to begin with, tightly or if it is working loose during firing.

remembered to try this today for ya.
cranked on the barrel with the spanner and then tried to get it off by hand, no way, that sucker was on there TIGHT!

im wondering...... it was super cold out and i was shooting it which of course makes the barrel warm..... cold and warm going back and forth a couple times..... maybe that 'assisted' in the barrel nut loosening itself up some, eh?

that AR7 barrel nut was also not super tight as well, not as loose as the Papoose but definitely not as tight as when i started the afternoon.

A few weeks back it was about -20 with little wind. Had my son and two nephews out target shooting with 4 .22LR and my MVP for the end. (This was a first time for the nephews who are over 25 but never handled firearms before.)

After going through 140 rounds on the MVP I notice the kids are missing the coconut by 1/2" or less repeatedly? I try and also miss by a fraction a few shoots. This rifle, at approximately 60m, never misses? I start checking things and find the scope mount screws have come loose, almost out, on both ends! It had been fine for over 2 years but this was the coldest I'd ever had the rifle outdoors. It didn't help that Mossberg failed to use loctite. So I can see how a barrel nut might work it's way loose in extreme weather while shooting.

I also use G96 95% of the time when cleaning/lubing my firearms. Have yet for any to freeze or lockup, yet.

i had the same thing a happen to my mini14 back in December.
was out with a co-worker and i have a nice new Vortex on my Mini14 and all of a sudden my shots went to pot and my co-worker asked me what just fell off my gun, we looked and the rear ring had lost its bolt!

ive never had that happen.
same as you i was up over 100 rounds for the afternoon and it was a balmy -30.

i chalked it up to me not loctite'n it down.
gives me an excuse to use my new scope mounting kit!

Thanks for a great thread!
Any updates?
I just ordered an AR-7, and am in the process of selling a 10/22 TTD. Not a popular move, but I need something I can easily strap to my bike. I could do it with the TTD (only trips to the range), but the AR's smaller size, and "hard case", will make it easier to take off road and survive creek crossings, rock showers, and the occasional "dirt nap".
I hope I won't give up too much on accuracy.........

no updates.
we are in a cold snap, far too cold to want to sit out on the bench doing target shooting @50 and @100, -30 just is not a fun time to target shoot.
plus those damn scopes STILL are not in yet.
as long as they are in by the time the weather breaks so i can get them mounted up and get out to the range for a couple trips to do the scoped accuracy testing.

im almost considering forgoing the scopes i ordered and just going down to the LGS and buying one scope and using it for all the guns.
put it on one go out for the afternoon and run it.
get home, swap it over to the next gun and do the same, rinse repeat.

im almost thinking that might be easier than waiting for these 4 Bug Busters to come in from China!

Are bug busters really the kind of scope you'd use for these types of guns? (honestly asking). I would have thought it'd be something like a Bushnell fixed 4x.

Would a sub2000 qualify? I'm thinking about one of these for survival rifle purposes. 10rnd mag 9mm folds compact...

I have the 9mm sub 2000, awesome little rifle, fits in backpack or computer bag, it's really light and packs way more punch than a 22. Feel a little more comfortable in black bear country with it than my Henry AR. It's quite accurate offhand out to 50 yds.

well i ordered 4 of them specifically for these guns, i wanted a nice compact little scope and it looked like it would fit the bill.

What kind of money are the Bug Busters from China? Can you provide the link?

They are typically $35-50 USD on Aliexpress and similar Chinese sites;

ya i followed Tom's advice a while back and got an older version one for $38US i think it was.
only bad thing is the wait for shipping, i believe im up to 44 days now.
im expecting them around the 60-90 day mark if the last order i did from China is a accurate gauge of time.
if i hadn't needed so many of them i would have just ate the cost and got them from Amazon in 3 days but at less than half the price ill sit on my hands and wait for slow shipping.

I have decided to start into the 50m and 100m accuracy testing this week.
just did a weather check and the cold snap is lifting!

also i was out in the shop and i took my Vortex off my Mini14 as im going to use my new scope mounting kit to put it on all professional like and then i had a brain storm.... why not just use this nice Vortex to do the test!

so im gonna take one gun out each day and put the Vortex on it and do the test so each gun will use the exact same scope so any crappy shooting cant be blamed on a different optic as they will all be using the same one.

i mounted the scope on Gun #1 and printed off a stack of targets so im ready to hit the range tomorrow, weather permitting!

im just unsure about ammo.
im thinking i should continue to use CCI Blazer and keep that constant throughout the entire test but...... but..... i was thinking i should maybe use some snappier ammo maybe?

in the end ive decided to stick with the CCI Blazer that way i would have used the same ammo throughout the entire test - keeping another thing constant keeps the playing field even so we can evaluate the guns better i think.

i will update later this week hopefully with the accuracy testing being done!
