That pesky Norc Flash Hider Set Screw @#@%!~#%

Went to replace the Norc hider on my M305 with a USGI hider and for the life of me I could not find a suitable allen key (and I have a pile of those things) to fit that Norc screw. Very close, but not close enough:mad:

After much muttering and head scratching, I decided to put a dab of JB Weld on the best fitting allen key, jammed it in the screw, and let it set for 20min.

Worked like a charm. Screw started turning, and turned out enough to clear the castle nut. Man, I was smiling.

What surprised me was that the allen key could not be extracted from the set screw without applying some heat.

My rifle sure pings nice with that USGI hider installed.:)

Nice! Which one did you put on and what is the thread size? I have been thinking about doing the same... Thanks for the tip.

Thread size? As in set screw or flash hider? I installed a USGI flash hider with bay lug. No idea what the Norc set screw thread size is.

JB Weld is a good idea. I Will have to remember that one. small torx bit tapped into the stripped set screw has worked for me in the past.
Those flash hiders are like a tuning fork.
 
Smart move. Nothing more irritating than having a couple hundred assorted hex keys...and not one fits the task at hand! BTDT...:)
 
I only have one Allen key that fits the chi-com set screw.... of the dozen or so sets, only one fits!

It's a Princess auto special, the keys are 4" long (or so) brushed silver in color. The set came with a red "holder" with no marking in the holder or Allen keys....

It is annoying, but I guard that particular Allen key from loss/theft better than most would protect their 16yr old daughter....

The standard theory is that actions get assembled blasted and then dipped in the park tank, flash hider installed set screw in. depending on how much blasting the set screw gets would determined the weird in between sizes we see.

The plating probables adds a few thousandths to make it fit

I keep losing my Allen keys. My daughter is going to be in so much trouble.
 
Set screw? All depends on which high school's shop class put your rifle together.... Lately I've had success (believe it or not...) with a simple 1/16" hex key that came with my Remmy M700 XMark Pro trigger. Go figure..... :wave:

And once in a while, at some random clinic, we will get a member whose set screw will not fit any of the 10 to 15 sets of Allen Keys both SAE and Metric.... :mad:
