Whats your opinion on muzzle brakes?

I absolutely hate them. I've had these kicking around for quite some time. They arrived on barrels that were pulled.
Figured I should really do something useful with them.

those are not brakes, I think companies marketed that style as a "magnaport" or something.

basically makes gun louder to everyone including the shooter with little to no recoil reduction

Those are most definitely brakes. They are the KDF style brakes that reduce recoil by up to 50%. Magnaporting is a process where slots are cut in the actual barrel.

I had the name wrong

Looks identical to browning Boss and other style ports that do a horrible job at recoil reduction and increase noise to the shooter much more than conventional brakes.

For hunting it has to be linear or hearing protection for large calibers where a linear is not realistic

I absolutely abhor muzzle brakes. If I cannot handle the recoil, then I will step down a notch in power.
They are noisy to the extreme, and as Stubble says, they can have a detrimental effect on accuracy when
a load is developed with one on the rifle, and then it is removed to hunt with. D.

To me you are one of the wisest CGNers, but respectfully while I know you are talking about your own preference, I think that is a bit of a drastic statement.
I personally would not want to hunt with a breaked rifle. But I think they have their place for target shooting and such.

I won't argue too much there, particularly once one increases case capacity to Lapau/CheyTac/Ma Deuce volumes. This is the hunting rifle section though, and we'd expect the posts to represent hunting rifles and cartridges. In that vein, I've been injured more severely by the blast from a braked rifle than I ever have by recoil; I vividly recall making a snap shot with a braked .375 H&H, which I found particularly painful.

I wouldn't use them on a hunting rifle personally, but I love brakes on my target guns.

I want to own big bores for a few reasons, but mainly because I can, and part of that is accepting muzzle brakes. They are wonderfully useful tools when they are properly designed and installed, and all that is required is a little bit of respect towards any guys you may be shooting near.

Besides, it seems like 80% of all AR style firearms are now equipped with brakes of some kind instead of flash hiders, and nobody is complaining about the recoil on those guns (Except for that one epic sig line haha). Brakes serve more than just recoil reduction, it is a massive advantage to be able to spot your own shots on target as they land instead of reacquiring the target afterwards. This applies to bolt guns as well.

I bring this up because even though it is the hunting forum, guys seem to be talking about their downsides mainly as having to shoot beside them on a range.

Just my .02 from a guy who wears appropriate ear pro at the range.

The number of people that pull up to the range, unload all their stuff with about three trips back to the car, then find a bench and get all their gear ready, then pull out some earplugs - blows my mind. Meanwhile four other people have been banging away the whole time. Then that "someone" complains that the 308 has soo much muzzle blast they can hardly take it. Put on your hearing protection when you get to the range your hearing will thank you.

So what type of hearing protection protects a person from the concussive wave that a brake produces if you are at the next bench? As to the AR shooters, most of them that I see are only concerned with emptying the mag as quickly as they can, usually at a very large target, at very close range. At the rate of fire that these people are using, they are lucky to keep all of their shots on the target, let alone see the bullet holes as they are shooting.:p

Seems the confusion is some folks are talking about "hunting" rifles whereas others are "sporting arms" uses for target/precision.
Different usage, different setup.

For my Tikka CTR for hunting NO brakes.
Same CTR for target shooting to push below 1/2MOA for sure a brake to reduce muzzle flip.

You think a brake is loud, I had one of those cheese grater brakes ,from iron eagle tactical, that sucker made my ears ring for 20 minutes. ( forgot my ears and forgot that my laser bore sighterwas in the barrel) :) ouch
When hunting,no brake, and no hearing protection,as I don't hear the bang ,from all the excitement:)
