I have just started loading. 223 for an AR-15 on my Dillon 550. I ham having alot of trouble with getting the new primer seated in the brass. The primers get jammed going into the pocket and is deforming the primers. I have tried stopping on the downstroke and cleaning the pockets but even this has limited success. The brass is once fired Rem.. 223 and CCI 400 primers. I don't know if this is press issue or brass issue. (the press works 100% for 9mm and .45ACP) Does anyone have any tips or experience with this problem? Thanks

I just have a Lyman hand reamer which I tried a handful of times on them still with limited success. I am guessing that I might need a better quality swagger?

I've had the "pleasure" of reaming hundreds of 5.56/.223 cases with the Lyman hand reamer and it works just as well as a swager -- it's just more labour intensive unless you take the reamer off the handle and chuck it into a hand drill. It could be you aren't reaming enough.

All that said, I switched to the RCBS Primer Pocket Swager-2 and swage on my press now...I have carpal tunnel in one wrist already, I didn't want to aggravate it any further. Works very well.

yes might have to be better swagged, if needed? also ensure on the 550b, that piece which looks like a paper clip, that holds your brass in place in the shellholder, is properly set up. if your brass isn't lined up properly and can flop around, your primers won't be lined up and cause this problem as well. something to check.

Thanks for all the advice. I will check the alignment first even though it's probably a long shot that it will fix the problem. I intended on loading up at least 1000 rounds so having to mess with primer pockets on each piece is definitely going to add some time to this.

Thanks again

But when you collect your brass thankfully it's only a 1 time deal.

I run my 550 without that POS springy thing installed and loaded thousands of .233 rounds.
The machine self aligns everything on the up stroke.
The OP's problem is his brass.
It needs to have the crimp removed from the primer pocket.
I'd be willing to bet his life on it.

swage issue...

I bought the swage-it 650, but it doesn't really swage "enough" so I have to run the brass through the super swage manually to do it....
If I had to do it over again, I would buy a 1050 with the swage already on press for a no hassle prep.
OR, just buy your brass already prepped and swaged. Will cost double, but then you can reload that brass forever and not bother again.
