Savage vs. CZ 452 or CZ455

If you had a choice of the Savage TR, the CZ542 ( think I found a new one ) or a CZ455. Just want it for punching holes in paper.
 
Any of them could be great or could be so-so. Personally I have a 455. After messing with the trigger, bedding it and finding optimum barrel torque it works well enough for me. I think the 452 is likely less finicky? I like the switch barrels- I mostly use the .22 but like taking the HMR out every once in a while... Where's my beer...
 
What I have spent on CZ's would have afforded my an Anschutz 1710 or 1712.

A CZ will be around long enough you could put it in your will . . . not that I would want to nor want you to either! The Savage maybe not!

Remove the spring and bring it to Home Hardware to compare length and diameter and get a 2 dollar Century spring... or a few with slightly thinner wire diameter and same dimensions.
 
I bought a Savage Mark II TR. Great out of the box configuration with the hard wood stock. Shot 1 MOA groups this weekend, my first time shooting bench rest, with cheap ammo from 50 yards.
 
I had a Savage Mk2 a couples years ago, which I bought new in 2009 ( if I remember well ).
It was very accurate. I loved the Accutrigger back then.
Like *jza* said, the TR is a great out of the box configuration.

BUT

Savage quality these days is not what it used to be, epecially the Accutrigger.
The build quality is not consistent and that's sad because they are made in Canada. Maybe the tooling is faded and need a refresh, dunno...
I bought another Mk2 about a year ago and I was disapointed with the overall quality of the newer models, even some of the centerfire models.

I have 2X 452's, one Varmint in a Boyds tacticool stock and also the American model with Walnut stock.
I really likes them. I had a 455 Varmint in the first place but decided to sell it to buy the 452 Varmint because I don't swap barrels anyway.

CZ quality is very consistent and as long as I remember it was always like this.

Short answer : CZ is the way to go.

I prefer the 452 over the 455 by a slight margin but I don't think you can go wrong with either of them.
 
Compare the receivers and bolts of CZ and Savage. Side by side, it's easy to see the CZ's are bigger and more robust. Design and machining of the CZ bolt is better quality, and so easy to dismantle for cleaning. Even aesthetically, the CZ looks prettier.

And this is a big one for me; the CZ bolt and firing pin design allows safe dry firing without damage to firing pin and breech. When Shane at Reliable Gun explained that to me, I was very impressed and the price difference between CZ and Savage became moot.

I still have a Savage Mk2F and a Mk1GY as both are accurate and mostly used to teach new shooters.
 
Had a CZ 455 and a Savage Heavy Stainless with a lovely Boyds Stock. CZ was more accurate but the AccTrigger on my Savage was light years better. The CZ had a horrible trigger. Also the new CZs are coming with BEECH Stocks now where the older ones were Turkish Walnut. You'd think for the price difference CZ could build a decent trigger.

Yep~my Savage Rascal remains too. My kids have outgrown it, but won't let me sell it either. I suspect I'll be teaching my grandkids to shoot with it one day. I also have a heavy-barrel Savage .223 that is a laser, no plans on ever selling that. My Savage rimfire days (Rascal aside) are mostly behind me. We'll see. Thought I'd never buy another Cooey...but here I am with a nice model 600 I've yet to shoot. :)
